THE LAST FISH REPORT OF 2008 You know we haven't been catching very many fish the last few days but they have been some Big Boys. Today we hooked and landed 2 fish shown in the photos of the day, both of which are over 300 lbs and one of them will join the over 360 lb club which to my knowledge is the top 10 list. Again we see lots of fish and we have been throwing everything but the kitchen sink at them - maybe we should try that? Anyhow we are going to give the Giant Tuna fishing one more day and most likely start working up the line.
Happy New Year to everybody and best wishes from the American Angler family to yours !!! GOOD NIGHT The Cow Killers |

PRETTY MUCH A REPEAT OF YESTERDAY Again lots of sign of fish but they just are not in the biting mode for us - but one of these days... we'll just leave it at that. However we did pick up another 300 lb fish today, and if you're not going to catch very many fish they may as well be Giants. We are going to give this another day and if things are the same tomorrow, we are going to try for some action fishing, where ever that might be. No complaints, the weather is still flat calm so tomorrow is make it or break it.

HOPE WE ARE HERE WHEN THIS STUFF GOES OFF !!!! By our score on the fish board one would not be impressed, however the 4 fish we did land were nice ones. Let's start off with the tally - Gary with a 165, Nacho with a 262, Eyton wih a 266 and last but not least Jake and Capt. Ray with fish of a lifetime, one for the record books weighing in at 375 on our boat scale which was calibrated in Aug of 08. We always Gill n' Gut the bigger fish on the American Angler, but just so there is no question about the weight we left the fish whole to weigh it back at the dock, it may lose just a couple of pounds but regardless it truly was a Giant. We are seeing a lot of fish down here, when they really decide to bite, hope we're here.

START UP KIT We spent a few hours letting the gang get out of the car and stretch their legs and do some fishing today. We arrived at the Top end of the Ridge around 11:00 in the am and had steady fishing on some Tuna and Yellows for about 3 hours, and the bonus is that we had a not-very-good ride down with Northwest wind and swell the first day and then had up to 25 knots of northeast wind starting last night which didn't make for a fun ride at all. Good things happen to good people, I'm a firm believer in that because the weather laid down and turned out to be a beautiful day. The photo of the day is of our good buddy Nacho with a shot of some of the Tuna we had today. We are on our way down the coast, bound for the Bait grounds in hopes of catching a box of Greenies just in case they come in handy tomorrow. The forecast looks great so we hope the Big ones are waiting for us!

Tiburon is Home The guys and gals returned late in the morning from this productive 10 day trip and prepared for the unloading...everyone had their share of tuna from 25lbers to 245lbers and this group enjoyed each other's company to the end (see group photo below). We want to thank Skip Stenbro of Tiburon for the on board sponsorship/ great gifts and to Melanie Kito for the girl's pink Fish Junkie sweatshirts! (www.fishjunkie.net) Also a big thanks to our webmaster, Barry Gambarana, for not only providing the entertainment and trip photos during this adventure but also for being the shuttle service afterwards. Check out jackpot winners below and congratulations gentlemen! 1st place: Craig Corneal 245 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 2nd place: Clyde Wickham 224 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 3rd place: Eric Binz 208 lbs Yellowfin Tuna (and a shout out to Bruce Wheeler who does this trip every year who caught a 238lber!)

Thats All Folks We spent the last fishing morning of our trip doing something a little different than the last few days. Carrying our 50-sized reels with 130lb mono around like it was our third arm the last 5 days, we have become very used to it and this morning we woke up in an area that called for our lighter outfits. We yo-yoed yellows for several hours this morning as they were in the cooperating mood. After carrying around the big gear, our 40 and 50lb gear seemed feather weight. The busy action this morning was a nice change of pace and rounded up a great trip. This trip we were very lucky that everyone aboard has caught at least one fish over 100lbs (Lori get the shirts ready) which is not what these ten day trips are all about, but it is a special gift. We were also blessed with 7 fish that weighed over 200lbs and the amazing visual show and epic battles that go along with it. Both front and back sides of our fishing days we were lucky enough to get action on school-sized fish that added a little something for everyone. Not to get too softy mushy, but the real success of this one was how our group meshed. We have all shapes and sizes from different parts of the country and today - day eight, we have turned into one. The emotional highs and lows that go along with cow fishing was totally put aside with every nice fish that came over the rail being a real team victory. Skip Stenbro from Tiburon reels is a great and generous sponsor and we appreciate everything that he does for everyone. Tonight's picture is Michelle Jordan with one of her two fish she landed over 100lbs. She would like to say hi to Abby, Liam, Indiana and Tony Jr. and would also add that grandma misses you all. And we also have to add one of Marky Bobby and Planet Paul because it was a lot of work posing for this one.

Perfect And Close To Perfect After yesterday's wind and the raining and windy weather report from home, we feel very blessed. Today's weather on a scale of one to ten (with ten being the best) had to be at the top of the scale. In the morning we had residual wind swell but by dark the ocean was eerie calm and when we stopped the boat we would not even move. We fished today in one of the big fish zones. Once again we did not catch as many (do we ever?) as in comparison to what we saw. The amazing thing about today is that better than half of what we hooked was in excess of two hundred pounds. We hooked 8 fish and landed 6 with three of them better then 200lbs. Ricky Bobby Lea, Randy Corneal and "Paps" Papayans were the three lucky anglers. We have three father-son combos aboard this trip. Randy and Craig Corneal show off pop's 208lber and their happiness is pretty evident. Rich Callen got a helping hand from son John and Taro with one of yesterdays mid grade fish.

Captain Excuse List Today we experienced choppy 15-18kts of breeze all day long. Thankfully after yesterday we had someplace to spend it on the anchor. In the morning one of the most common excuses on the list "there is no current" seemed to be the popular one. Then the one "maybe it's going to be an afternoon bite" only means that it remained slow throughout the morning. We saw a little more sign of fish later in the day but it remained tough to get a bite. We ended up the day scratching 9 fish with the majority of them over 100lbs. The last fish of the day was a very interesting one. Planet Paul Yarnold who had the hot stick hooked and handed it off to an angler who has not yet got a good one. That fish ended up being pulled on by Barry, Skip, Ray and John to name a few and when it hit the deck, it weighed out over 200lbs. This just goes to show how well this group has molded into one happy fishing community. Because this fish is community it will be donated to John Heil and other navy seals that proudly protect what America is and for which she stands for. As a result this evening's photo is that fish and everyone that was involved with it.

Searching After driving around in the cow zone for a couple of days for just a few bites, we went looking for some action. Where we started there was no conditions and even though we saw a few fish we could do nothing with them. We went searching and ended up getting lucky in the afternoon. We had good action on tuna fish the last three hours of the day. We had many tuna in the 90-110lb range with a fair mix of 25-50lbers. To make up for the days that we have no photos, our photographer went crazy. The father-son team of Papa John Lopez with his proud son Ray, is in full glory. Mark Jacobson proves he has enough strength to lift the fish by himself after a good battle (excuse the blood). Melanie Kito with the help of Taro shows why she loves Tiburon Reels.

Epic Battle Today was another enjoyable weather day on the grounds. We saw plenty of scattered sign of biggies all day long. The second stop of the day, Eric Binz pulled 208lb tuna out of his hat. The rest of the day was pretty tough to get a bite, but everyone hung in there because the chance of hooking a grande was always there. Craig Corneal once again hooked the big one of the day and was in for the battle of his lifetime. After about an hour he finally got it close to the boat right out of gaff range when his hook broke in half and the whole boat watched it swim away. Being the good sport he did not snivel and only smiled which gained a unanimous applause out of admiration from the whole boat. We ended up the day with only a handful of fish and a few stories of the one that got away. Our picture today is Clyde Wickham with the big fish he boated yesterday.

Taking Advantage When our work and or hobbies involve outdoor activities, we are at the mercy of mother nature. Today we were blessed with beautiful flat calm weather and we were able to use it to our advantage. When it comes to looking for cows and then landing them, we couldn't have asked for better weather. Craig Corneal led todays parade with a 245lb tuna closely followed by Bruce Wheeler with his 238 and Clyde Wickham's 224. Several other people were granted their personal best as all the other fish that hit the deck weighed in over 100lbs. The cool thing about today was that the fish were spread out throughout the group with over half of the passengers boating a fish. Sorry we didn't get any pictures of the cows but we did get a few cool shots of the first couple that came aboard. Responsible for getting the skunk off the boat was Mike Papayans with a 156, getting the assist from a couple of "Paps" Lunada Bay brothers. Steve Frost put number two on the boat and he got help with his 158 from his North County crew.

Action Packed We lucked out and started the trip off with a bang. We found an area of fish and we were able to pick decent grade tuna at a steady pace. Today's picture is Barry Gambarana and Carl Zimmer with one of these decent grade fish. Before the trip, Carl's son in-law Dave e-mailed Barry and asked him to keep an eye out and he has been on point the whole way down.

MAKING A DAY OF IT OUT OF THE WEATHER It hasn't been the nicest traveling weather for the past 400 miles, it went from flat calm to a little Bump, Bump in a very short time, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Anyhow, we had a very good day of Yellowtail fishing yesterday to end our trip on a high. In the photos of the day are our Bobs Sporting Goods sponsor, Jay, showing off his fish bouncing skills and Mike showing us long range guys how to fish for yellows like he fishes back home on my good friend's boat, the San Diego out of Seaforth, where he and his wife Vicki are regulars. It's been some choppy seas the last couple of nights but we have made the best of it and it looks we will be home right on time tomorrow. We would like to Thank Everybody on the trip for coming out with us, we can't Thank you enough - it is our pleasure to take you fishing. And also a Thanks to Mike Naoe of Bobs Sporting Goods for all the nice give away stuff - we're sorry you couldn't be here.

Change of Pace Today we had steady fishing on 12-15lb Yellowtail and a few more 25-30lb Tuna, so everybody got a few. We're running up the line - someone turned on the weather machine today. GOOD NIGHT, The Guys |

CANT SAY WE DIDN'T GIVE IT OUR ALL... Today again was a day of All Show and No Go for us - we found enough spots of fish in the late morning but were unable to hook anything. There is no doubt in my mind that there is going to some really good fishing on the Giant Tuna in the near future, but not today. We are going to work up the line tonight and fish the way up instead of taking the chance to maybe catch a few bigger fish down in the lower zone. We have plenty of Tuna and it's time to fish for something else. GOOD NIGHT, The Guys |

YOU GOT TO TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD Up until around 30 hours ago, everywhere we went, we caught fish - now things are a little different. I'm not making this a long report, but I have always asked myself what is worse; when you are the Captain seeing fish that don't bite or just not seeing fish at all? The result is the same anyway you look at it and for us it was seeing nice size Tuna that wouldn't bite. We didn't see any less sign of fish but the bottom line was they didn't want it. The photo of the day is of Dave who was very lucky today - he caught the only 2 fish of the day, a 97 and 106lb Yft.....Well he had a good day. The weather is still flat calm and we are not giving up any time soon.
GOOD NIGHT AND THINGS ARE GOING TO GO OFF SOON, The Gang ps. Maureen, thinking of you and love you, seaya soon. ps. Vicki, Miss you and can't wait to see you. ps. Christian, got a big one yesterday on your rod having fun. From Uncle Larry. |

WELL IT'S TIME TO BREAK OUT THE BIG GEAR We arrived in the zone first thing in the morning and rolled right into a couple of stops to start our day. The fish were anywhere from 80 to 157 lbs for us and a couple of the other boats had fish over 200 and up. We still have a bunch of time on our trip, so we hope in the next few days it's our turn. The photo of the day is a sample of the fish taken by the guys.
GOOD NIGHT AND FOR NOW, GREAT WEATHER, The Gang |

NICE WEATHER AND NICE FISHING We had another day of steady fishing on 25 to 35 lb Tuna today, and in the afternoon we had a very nice surprise. It seems like some of the bigger fish are showing up and we were lucky enough to pick up a few that settled the jackpots, for now. The photos of the day are Randy and Freddie with 2 of 3 over the 100lb mark that we caught today - also the biggest fish was caught by BJ Beck weighing in at 133 lbs (without it's tail attached to the fish, but that's all the shark got). We are going to spend the night out here before running into the beach and hope things have changed for the better there... but for now we are off to a good start.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

|
OFF TO A GOOD START We arrived at our destination around 10:00 in the morning and started to see sign of Tuna - it took us a few stabs to get settled in on the right spot, and then we had very good fishing on 25 to 35 lb Tuna for the afternoon. The photo of the day is Mundo Nigreti with the stand Tuna of the day, we did hook a few more of these size fish but, well you know! The reports from down below are that there is sign of seeing the bigger fish, but they're not biting so good. We are going to give this another day before making our move and let things change, hopefully for the better.
GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK, The AA Gang |

A Good Stretch We enjoyed as good a ride up from down below as any one could ask for. We arrived on the yellowtail grounds just after daylight and had a decent day of fishing. We were able to poke around all day the bite overall could be described as scratchy but spirits remained high and with every drop of a jig there was a chance to get bit. Etti Yootanawin is pictured with one of his better catches and his smile speaks a million words.

The True Meaning This group that we are lucky enough to have aboard with us truly understands and gets what these fishing trips are all about. We spent the niight on the anchor and had a small kelp paddy drift in our lights and dropped of a school of about 500 decent sized Dorado. Most of our passengers being expirienced anglers understood how they wanted to utilize our oceans resources. The guys that wanted to catch a few to take home and eat caught a few and the guys that didn't watched the aquarium type show. We had to pull the anchor in the morning because they refused to leave and when we reset we started picking at the tuna right away. Joe Skinner (as Shown) landed the largest fish of the morning at 72lbs and there were several other decent fish boated. Everyone has plenty of fresh tuna to utilize at home so we pulled the anchor before lunch and are headed up the line for big yellows.

Therapy After setting ourselves up to look for the big ones and missing we had to change gears and just worry about having fun and catching a few fish. We used yesterday as a day to stage ourselves mileage wise to take full advantage of today. We were blessed with good weather and we made the most of it from daylight till dawn. We made one anchor job and enjoyed steady tuna fishing and a few bonus yellows all day long. The majority of the fish were school grade with Lucky Reynolds catching a 132lber and Jay Love catching two standouts in the 50-75lb class. Pictured is Charles Reynolds with proof that it is more important to be Lucky then good.
Living the Good Life!! The Guys The Royal Star and Red Rooster had banner days on the lower banks today. Randy had 7 fish over 200lbs,a 308lber and a 378lber. Andy also had 5 fish over 200lbs along with several more fish in the 100lb class. It just wasn't in the cards for us this trip the way things played out for those cows but we are making the most of it. This is very exciting for all of us that enjoy long range fishing because due to the unseasonably warm water it looks like this year might be a long and prosperous season for big ones. |
|||||||||
|
Live With It When we left the dock, we all had the mindset of going down and catching big ones. We put ourselves in position to be on the grounds yesterday and as you well know, it just wasn't time. In order to put ourselves in position for the rest of the trip, today ended up being another driveathon. Today's picture is John Keating and the closest thing we got to a fish..... a broken line.
WE Can Never Achieve Our Goals If We Never Try, The Guys Andy Cate's on the Red Rooster deserves kudos for persevering two days of driving around the lower banks with catching the first two hundred pounder! |

When? We were down in the cow zone today looking for a repeat of last year's trip. It's funny that we saw sign of big fish on the machines in almost exactly the same place where we caught them last year. It's not a question of "if", it's a question of "when". Today's picture is a group of our die hard soldiers waiting for battle.
Having Fun, The Guys |

Fun We started the day off looking for wahoo. It was much slower than we had expected or liked so we relocated for the afternoon. We arrived at our afternoon destination right after lunch and immediately started getting some fish. We caught nice grade 25-30lb tuna and ridge grade yellows on just about anything thrown in the water. By late afternoon everyones fish thirst was quenched. Todays picture is our father-son tandem of Pat Patrykus Sr. and Jr.
Off To The Pasture, The Guys We don't know if our buddy Ed from the ITTC reads our website or not, but if somebody knows him maybe you can give him a call. Today we caught a Bluefin tuna in 77 degree water in an area where we have never seen them caught this time of year. Because we were busy working at the time we didn't take a picture of this 22lb fish but later we wondered if it could be a Southern Bluefin Tuna because it did look a little out of the ordinary. Chances are it's a Pacific Bluefin but in any case we have it "chillin" in our RSW tank for later observation. |

|
Start Up Kit Due to the uphill current we experienced during our first day of travel, we decided to look offshore for fish. We had beautiful weather to work in as we scratched a few tuna, dorado and wahoo throughout the day. We never found a wide open stop but just about the time one would get drowsy reading his book in the galley, we would stop the boat and try over the side. Today's picture is Randy Morgan, Steve Sargent, Lucky Reynolds, and Joe Skinner with a sample of one of our stops late in the day.

STEADY SCRATCH FISHING ON THE ANCHOR We spent most of the day picking at Quality size Yellows, 18 to 25 lbs. It sure seems like we have been spending a lot of time this trip circumnavigating the Ocean, so it was nice to only make a couple of moves today around the Island. The photos of the day are Mr. Clark and Steve with a sample of the grade fish everybody enjoyed today. The forecast looks good for the ride up the line, and we're on our way home.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Team |

TODAY WAS A LITTLE BETTER It hasn't been a gimme the last couple of days for us, and today was no exception - we fished the beach for a few Yellows and a few Tuna. Tomorrow we are going to fish the Big Island in hopes of some Quality to finish up our trip and on a bright note, the weather seems to be straightening out again so we are liking that. GOOD NIGHT AND KEEP TRYING, The AA Gang |

DIDN'T SEE THE BUS COMING After a good day of Tuna fishing yesterday which included some really nice quality fish mixed in, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought today would have turned out the way it did - we went from Hero to Zero????. That's fishing. We weren't going to put ourselves through that again tomorrow so we are running up the beach to spend the last couple of days looking for Yellows. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Crew |

WILL SOMEBODY TURN THE WIND MACHINE OFF PLEASE After a few days of Flat calm weather and hot weather, last night things changed in a hurry. There is a cold front moving through pretty much on the whole coast and all of us down here got a taste of some wind and seas. Enough of that - let's get to the fishing part: we had a good day of Yellowfin fishing again, but the bonus was that we picked at some better quality fish which is just what we were looking for. The photos of the day are Jimmy and Ron with their two fish over the 100lb mark which were the stand outs and we had several in the 40 to 50 lb range to top off our day. We are going to sit tight and see what happens tomorrow with the weather and the fishing and just go from there. We are planning to spend a day or two on the beach fishing for Yellows at some point, but until then we're just going to play it by ear.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

A DAY ON THE RIDGE We spent most of the day trolling for Wahoo and thankfully we were able to get a few for our efforts. There is a lot of good things going on right now and I would have to say fishings going to get a bit interesting here for upcoming trips, I'll just leave it at that. Today's photo is our regular passenger, Art Preston, with the Biggest Wahoo of the day - that should make a lot of fish Tacos when he gets home. We are making a move here tonight and we still have a bunch of time left to fish on this trip so we'll see what happens tomorrow.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang PS To Haley and Mitch - I am bringing home some Wahoo and miss you guys, Love Daddy. |

WITH EVERY GOOD DAY, YOU GET A SLOW ONE Well I'll be honest, I was like a little Kid last night and could hardly sleep. After rolling offshore late in the day and the first thing we saw, hooked and landed were some of the bigger tuna, I thought this is good and it's going to be easy.... "NOT". We spent all day going up and down and back and forth seeing a little bit here and a little bit there for no reward. It's not a matter of Where, it's just When these lower banks will be more reliable for the Bigger Tuna. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a long range boat in the very near future here posts a Big Fish Report! Tomorrow we are going to try to get a few Wahoo and just take it from there. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

TODAY WAS A CATCHING DAY We had very good fishing on 18 to 30lb Yellowfin Tuna this morning, it took a few hours to get on the right bunch but somehow or another it worked out. By lunch time we had a very good start and everybody enjoyed some Yanking and a Cranking...... so well you know how we Roll, it's time to go Hunting. We spent the afternoon mostly traveling, but just before Sundown we found what we were looking for. I'm not sure if it was dumb luck or what, but we did find one little dab of better fish late to give us hope for tomorrow. The photo of the day is Jimmy and Steve with a 91lb and a 140lb Tuna that we landed late and we did lose two other fish - so we're hoping this is a sign of things to come.
GOOD NIGHT AND WE'LL SEE? Team Anglers Choice |

SPENT MOST OF THE DAY TRAVELING Sorry for the delay on Thursday's report, we were upgrading our website servers, thanks for your patience. We started on the lower end of the Beach in hopes of snagging a loose Wahoo but that didn't happen, but we did find a lot of small Tuna and Smaller Yellowtail - we chose not to put a tag into any of these fish. The weather had been not so nice the last couple of days, but it has straightened right out and it was beautiful today. Basically tomorrow we plan on getting the party started and put some good fish aboard... so we'll see what happens. GOOD NIGHT. The AA Team. A huge thanks to Brad Lemoine for always being the glue of this group, we appreciate your work all year to organize and help everyone gear up for this adventure. Finishing Up Today we concentrated on fishing for better grade yellows on the beach. We were constricted due to the wind conditions as a North westerly is starting to make its presence felt. We were still able to scratch better then three around and we were lucky enough to get some good ones as well. Jeff Nichols got a nice one on the plug and retired U.S. Forest Firefighter and now Air Attack supervisor Tony Duprey show off some of the beauties we put aboard.

The Search Today we started on one of the many high spots that dot the Baja coastline. We had a strike right away and got a few fish out of our first stop. There was another boat in close proximity so we decided to take our chances elsewhere. Like all hunter gatherer mentalities the thrill is often the hunt. Today there wasn't a whole lot of thrill as once we started driving it seemed like we never stopped. All was not a complete waste as we did manage a handful of nice wahoo. This one caught by Dr. Chang on the troll with the assistance of Taro was a prime example.

![]() Yesterday there was signal of more wahoo showing up in the normal spots.Today we thought that we would have the opportunity to slide into one of these honey holes to take advantage but things didn't exactly end up that way. We drove around and had very little sign of wahoo so we ended up spending the day on the anchor After motoring around all trip this actually ended up to be alot of fun as we had steady action on small yellows and a decent grade of tuna. Pete Doherty is posing in todays picture with one of the handfull of wahoo we did manage to boat.

Stoked During the unstable and unpredictable times that we live in today, it's great to have the opportunity to escape reality if even just for a few days. We think that we can speak for everyone aboard that for the better part of the day we all just concentrated on having a good time. Enjoying long drifts on quality tuna, dorado and marlin is a temporary antidote for some of the worlds problems. We enjoyed steady action from daylight til the time we quit in the afternoon, not knowing which one of the three gamefish one would hook on any given bait. Dale Monday has the peculiar talent of having his picture on our website every year but this time was well deserved as he landed this beautiful bull dorado.
Enjoying Life, The Guys A happy B-day goes out to Nate as Grandpa Steve Nelson hopes it is a good one. |

Batter Up The old saying of "you can never get a hit if you never go to bat" applies to just about everything we do. Today we spent the day looking for big ones in the traditional big fish area. We saw a little bit of sign but could never really get the fish to fully cooperate. There is a list of excuses a mile long as to why we didn't get them but the fact of the matter is that we tried. All was not a total loss thanks to a couple of our regulars, Fermin Diaz and K.C. Brotherton, for using the right gear and making the most of the two bites we had today. Today's photo depicts the flat calm weather that we are enjoying and shows off the 96 and 88lb fish that were put aboard.

Blue Planet For those ocean going enthusiasts like ourselves, there is no better programming than Blue Planet. The description of today's fishing can be simply described as Blue Planet. We got on an area where there were balls of sardines being attacked from the air by birds and molested from the deeps by whales, seals, porpoise and tuna. We would slide up on these spots - the fish and everything else would stay up going down the side of the boat where the visual stimulation was as good as the bent rod held in our passengers hands. We had great fishing on 25-35lb tuna and today's experience on the water is one that will be remembered. Today's shot was taken by chef extraodinaire Paul Cloutier as it demonstrates the tough day that the pacific sardine endured.

Looking For Love Today we spent the day looking for wahoo with just a little luck. We had one stop where we hooked a few and the rest of the day was spent traveling with only the random jig strike, some of which made it to the boat and others that fell off. The slower fishing was definitely overshadowed by a few different things. One of which is the beautiful flat calm weather and a great forecast to go along with it. The other is the unparalleled camaraderie that is always a part of this Sport Chalet 10 day trip. A great example is today's picture of our first three wahoo that were put aboard. Rocky Opliger feels the brotherly love as he enjoys displaying the first of our catch with K.C. and Andy Brotherton.

BIG YELLOWS AT CEDROS After having just awesome Tuna fishing down below the last few days, we made the long run up to the Big Island to finish our last day of fishing. It wasn't easy, but with the team's efforts, we ended the day with a nice catch. The photos of the day are Rich & Rich with a sample of the quality fish caught by the gang. We are on our way home now - all the Rods are bundled up and reels put away and one more day of R & R for everybody before our arrival in the am. We would like to Thank everybody for coming again on the trip, there were only a couple of New faces and the rest were pretty much the regular gang, and we can't Thank you all enough for that. A special Thanks to our sponsor Steve Carson. Every night of the trip there was always a box of goodies to raffle off - I can't even begin to list all of the items he gave away and what a great job he did.

WHEN IT'S GOOD, IT'S GOOD!! I'd have to say we have been on a roll the last couple of days. Today we had awesome fishing on Yellowfin tuna and we have pretty much filled our quota, so tomorrow we will be targeting Others - Yellows, Dorado and/or a Wahoo. There is very good sign of this Yellowfin around like I've not seen in quite a few years and I'd like to think it's just a matter of time before we start seeing that bigger grade of fish show up here on the beach... it sure feels Right. GOOD NIGHT AND HOPE I'M RIGHT, The AA Gang ps Dear John...Dad is having a great trip! |

THE TIDE HAS CHANGED After circumnavigating the Eastern Pacific Ocean for the past two days, we were back in the Saddle today. We had good fishing on Yellowfin Tuna 20 to 35 lbs, some Yellowtail and one lone Wahoo to round out the day. The photo of day is John Childs with a Skin, first thing this morning. We hope we're back on track and intend to stick to the game plan for the next few days and put some fish onboard. We have fair weather to work with and one thing I might add is it is very Hot down in these neck of the woods.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

A DAY I'D RATHER FORGET There so many elements we have to deal with while trying to catch a Fish, sometimes it's the weather, or no Fish, see fish but they don't bite - the list is endless. Today was one of those days... we got on the fish (Bigger Grade) and today's element was Hungry Sharks in the same waters. Well tomorrow's another day so we will move on! And moving on is what we're doing right now; we are pointed to the inside somewhere and hope for better luck in the morning. GOOD NIGHT AND IT'S NOT OVER YET, The Gang |

LET'S GET THE PARTY STARTED Today was a fun day because we caught a little bit of everything on the first day of fishing. In the dark all the Gang were out there before the crack of dawn trying for fish, and just after the sunrise we started trolling for Wahoo and were lucky enough to get a little go-a-round on the Skinnys to start the day, as shown in the photos of the day. Then we had to do some fishing and were able to get on Tuna up to 35lbs mixed with a nice bite on Yellows to keep it interesting. We are moving on down tonight and we'll see where we fall in the morning.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

GOOD DAY OF FISHING TO FINISH UP We had a great day of fishing on Yellowfin and Yellowtail, the weather turned out to be just fine by late afternoon - which made for an awesome ending. BACK ON TRACK The Bad weather is behind us and the fishing today was just awesome. In detail, we had good fishing on Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna and picked up a Wahoo to round out the day. We are near the end of our trip with one more day to fish - the weather has backed off and we hope to end this one on a good note. We have had a great trip so far, it isn't going to take much to wrap this one up and put it on course for home with a smile on everybody's face. The photos of the day are Matt and Kyle with some of the bigger Yellows for today.

TWO REPORTS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE First of all let's start with the weather report; Hurricane Norbert is long gone so we dodged that bullet. We had flat calm for the first few days of our trip and then we had to start running away from Norbert. Our flat calm weather changed from flat to very choppy weather. Yesterday we fished the Rocks and picked up some Jackpot fish and some others, again playing it safe...it was time to run away up to the beach. Last night was not a nice ride - we had 20 to 30 knots of wind throughout the night and today. We did make it in here on the beach late and picked up a sample of wahoo and some Yellowtail before the sun went down. The weather should get better here starting tomorrow and boy do we hope the forecast is right. The photos from Yesterday are Tom and Steve with some of our Jackpot fish.
GOOD NIGHT AND PRAY FOR FLAT CALM AGAIN SOON, The Gang PS Check out the photo gallery on our website - Barry has been busy putting up trip pictures! |

DIFFERENT PROGRAM TODAY The last couple of days it has been an afternoon bite and no big deal it was still good fishing, but today we had sign of Wahoo right out of the gate and by 8:00 am it was over... I hate it when that happens. The weather is still good in our area so again No worries back home, we are making a move out to the west and hope for good luck. GOOD NIGHT AND THE CAMERA MAN WAS SLEEPING THIS MORNING, The Gang ps. Mike says hi- Chelsea, Emma, Colter & Snuggle puss. no fun out here... THEY MADE US WAIT AGAIN.... I don't know what it is or will ever know why fish bite when they do and when they don't.? Today was just like yesterday, you could just about set your watch to when the Tuna were going to bite. It was late in the afternoon and things started to get with it - we'll take it any way we can get it. Some of the Gang rounded out their limit of Tuna and others had enough for now. The photo of the day is Pat and our Cook Greg Muller very prepared to work the deck with all of his galley tools and deck tools to handle any thing that comes his way. We are running up the coast tonight and the weather is beautiful - Hurricane Norbert is on a westerly tac at the moment and everybody is fine and happy, so no worrying you loved ones back at home!
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

WE ARE BACK ON LINE We have spent the last couple of days traveling down the coast and today was the first day of fishing to start out our 10 day trips with Monte Parsons of M&M custom rods gang. This afternoon was the best fishing time - it seemed that we were just going through the motions until somebody hit the light switch and told the fish to bite and when the Sun went down over the horizon, it was a good day of fishing. We had our daily limit of Yellowfin Tuna with a few Dorado and one Wahoo to start the ball rolling. We are going to spend the day on the Ridge tomorrow before we have to get out of halloutofhere because there is a Hurricane coming our way. The photos of the day are Tom and Greg with a sample of todays activity.

A huge thanks to Ken and Wes for putting the trip together and all they do for the American Angler! Also thanks to the following for their generous donations: Blackwater, WFO, Calstar, Burns Saltwater Outfitters, Get The Gaff and Tiburon. Your gifts are much appreciated! WE FOUND OUR GOING-HOME-KELP After looking for hours in what looked like a dead ocean, as luck would have it we stumbled across a medium size kelp paddy and got the job done, and what a way to finish a trip! The photo of the day is Bill Patton who was trolling with only one on his line but managed to catch two small Yellowfin tuna, one of the fish seemed to be just tangled up in the line which is something you don't see every day. What a great trip... we would like to say Thank you to everyone, which was mostly made up of a core group of regulars that ride the boat on this trip every year and just a few new faces that made the voyage with us. And we can't say enought about our sponsors Ken and Wes of Kens Custom Reels for being a big part of our season.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, Your Crew, Sam, Taro, Cam, Jordon, Bubbles, Nate and of course Paul ETA 0700 And to our friend Steve Carroll if you're watching from the Islands - thanks for that extra special touch you added to the trip |

SAYING GOODBYE TO A PLEASANT SPOT Well the 2008 summer trips are coming to a close and Guadalupe Island has sure kicked out some nice quality fish the last few weeks, let alone the past few days for our Anglers on the American Angler - now it's time to leave with good memories for reminiscing. Today was still a good day of fishing here, but I would have to say we sure hit it right when we first arrived at our Paradise Island and are very happy to have the privilege to fish here. Tomorrow is our last day and with the Flat Calm weather we are going to finish up offshore before it's time to bundle up the rods, scrub the old girl down and put her on course for home.
FOR NOW GOOD NIGHT AND IT'S NICE TO BE LUCKY, The AA Gang |
|||||||||
|
DIFFERENT DAY Things weren't the same today - we did spend most of the morning looking at the better grade fish but they just did not want to bite. However, we still had a nice day on the 20 to 30lb Yellowfin and some Yellows up to 35lbs and did put together a nice day. We're going to give it another day before it's time to roll up the line and we hope the bigger fish are a little more playful in the morning. The photo of the day is John and Bill with a pair of the larger fish of the day.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

IT'S GOOD TO BE LUCKY Well, we are very happy we chose this destination because we had another nice day of fishing. To be honest, it takes a lot of patience at the rail, but if you spend the time, you can put a catch together. This fish is all mixed up - anywhere from 20lbs up to over 100lbs and you just don't know what you are going to catch when you get a bite. I love my job... We've got a couple more days here, so let's hope our luck continues. The photos of the day are Ken Corwin with Jamie Lyons, and also Mark Rubins with his Big Fish of the day.
GOOD NIGHT FROM KEN AND THE GANG P.S. To all of Bill Patton's family and friends - he is having the time of his life and is feeling well! |

OFF TO A GOOD START We arrived down here at the Big Island around lunchtime and to put it mildly, I was a little nervous about how the day was going to shake out. But as it turned out once again, we had a little bit of Luck on our side and were able to put together an afternoon on some Yellowfin Tuna. The photos of the day are some of the bigger models we picked up, and of course Sonia had the Biggest of the day by far. We are hanging out in the Lee of the Island having dinner and enjoying it. Sea what happens tomorrow.

Mellow Every group that we fish with has their own overall personality. We would like to thank Rich Jenkins and the Turners Fishing Club for once again hosting their annual 5 day fishing excursion. This group has to be one of our most mellow and laid back groups that we have the pleasure of being with throughout the year. Not only are they great to be around, the way they accept the "new folks" is with nothing but open arms. We fished a little bit locally and topped off the trip with a few more tuna. The ride up and home was a little bumpy but overall not that bad. Looking Forward To Next Year, The Guys |

|
A Little This A Little That We tried some spots of bigger fish first thing in the morning and unfortunately they did not react. After the writing was on the wall, we all spread out and did different things. Since we already have a pretty good catch of tuna aboard we tried a few spots for yellows. We didn't get any jumbos like the day before, but we were able to scratch away and catch a few before the wind came up and blew us off the spot. We spent the rest of the day picking away at 20-35lb tuna topped by a 50lber caught once again by Martha Bummer. We ended the day with over a hundred mixed fish and now this extremely mellow group has the wine flowing generously as they enjoy dinner.
Moving Up The Line, The Guys |

One Extreme To Another Today we tried to catch the better grade tuna and it ended up a little different than yesterday. Yesterday was wide open, put-it-in-gear action where as today it was the exact opposite. We saw good fish all day long and had it showing all around the boat, but it would not bite. Seeing 50-100lb fish blowing out right next to the boat but not biting is extremely frustrating. This was the name of the game for not only us but the rest of the fleet as well. We did manage to catch a couple of handfuls of tuna and then we picked away at some yellows and we are spending the night hoping that the fish change their attitude. Today's picture is our favorite person in the world, Mrs. Martha Bummer, with her big tuna and another picture of Ray Lopez with his reward for helping out (don't be jealous Natalie). Also included in today's photo gallery is Randy Rich with a Whopper of a yellowtail.
We Hope They Bite, The Guys |

Good Timing We woke up to a beautiful ocean with very little breeze and overall great fishing conditions. We were able to utilize our fish findiing electronics and mast man to their full potential. It took us a while to find the right zone but when we did it was game on. We had wide-open-in-the-corner type fishing on 18 to 30lb yellowfin tuna. An added bonus to our fishing day was lots of good grade dorado found under floating debris. Today's pictures are Monique Dixon with her first yellowfin and of one of our dorado honey holes.

Changing Conditions The variables that we deal with fishing always seem to be changing. My old boss Loomis used to say "as soon as you think you have it figured out, it changes 180 degrees" and we live with this quote on a daily basis. Our timing weather wise and fishing wise was as good as we could've asked for. Once again we had a nice day of fishing for quality fish with many of them 50-90lbs and two fish weighing over 100lbs. Everyone on the boat ended up with at least one big one to go with other school-grade fish. Shown in today's picture is the entire Skinny Pirates group as their smiles mean more than a million words. Is tuna fishing going to stay consistent? Our only answer is that we will always try our best.
Going Home, The Guys |
|||||||||
|
Good Ones Today we spent the day concentrating on catching good-sized tuna. We saw plenty of fish, and like all fishermen we wished we would've caught more. We finished the day with 28 fish from 40lbs on up to the two fish landed by Mas Kosaka and Steve Powell that weighed up more than 100lbs. Today's picture is our youngest deckhand, Bobby Bubbles, and our oldest passenger, 89 years young Skip Sato, with a stock grade fish of the day.
Hoping For More, The Guys |

Wood We spent our first day of this 5-day fishing venture in search of offshore yellowfin tuna. Conditions were not the best as far as visually spotting fish, due to the rolly choppy weather and poor lighting. I have to hand it to the crew's perserverance as they dealt with the tough conditions and put us on a few good stops in the morning. We then experienced a 7 hour dry spell where we couldn't find anything to stop on. Times like this is when others might fold under this type of adversity, but we are so lucky that this crew posseses the passion, desire and eyeballs to hunt them down. Right before dark we got on a spot that wanted to die. It was "straight calcutta" as we put the wood to this beautiful grade of yellowfin tuna. Today's picture is Taro, Chris Cruger and the good luck charm provided so generously by Lindsey Powell.

GOING HOME STOP!!! It's always nice to end a trip on a good note and that's just what went down today. You know the Ol saying, rather be lucky than good? well we got lucky. We had One stop that produced Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado, and it was good. The photo of the day is the whole Badfish Gang after dinner tonight with a bunch of smiles on their faces. What a great trip we had, and we had to work for it, but it ended up an awesome trip. We would like to Thank Louis of Badfish Rod Components for being the sponsor and all the gang for a wonderful trip!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Today was a good day but I'll be honest, it wasn't easy - throughout the day we just put it together, starting at daylight right up until dark. We ended the day with 50 of these Tuna, 80% being the bigger grade fish (meaning you would be very happy to catch this grade even on a 10 day trip, let alone a 5 day). We are running up the line tonight to finish things off with some offshore action. The photos of the day are Jim, Joe and Tim with some of the bigger models we got for our efforts.

THINGS ARE SHAPING UP OUT HERE In the last couple of weeks, I have seen things in the fishing scene I've not seen in a long time, in a good way. It is fact that there are fish showing up, Tuna, for example in a lot of different places, like back in 1998. I've seen Yellowtail fishing down the beach like it was over twenty years ago. Makes a guy wonder.... Today we spent the day out at the big Island and had good fishing on Quality size Tuna up to 100 lbs. The photos of the day are Steve and Louis with just a sample of our catch today, and we will be here tommorrow before we have to go back up the line.
GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK, The Gang |

START UP KIT! I am going to start this report with a comment on our weather...just beautiful. We started out fishing after daylight, but had to wait for the fish to come up and then we only fished til lunch, which was the best time of day and picked up 63 Yellowfin Tuna for the Gang's efforts. We are now en route to the Big Island and hopefully some action. The photo of the day is Dana Childs and Star crewman Cameron on the gaff.

IT'S GOOD TO BE LUCKY We spent our last day of the trip fishing offshore, had the Golden Horseshoe and found a couple of Kelps to make our last day well worth it. The photo of the day is something the Boyz came up with, so I couldn't help but take the shot. Bobs Sporting Goods = Mike Naoe. The Man. It was a pleasure and an honor to take this Gang fishing, they get so excited to catch anything and I must say they can get the Job done. GET ER DONE We ran down to one of our favorite hot spots in hopes of finishing up on Yellows and Man was it worth it. We had very steady action from just before daylight til a few hours after to round out the 15 fish quota... if one was in the need for more fish. The photo of the day shows some of the arsenal of Long Rods which were custom wrapped by Mike Naoe of Bob's Sporting Goods. We were are running up the line to finish off the trip.

THIS GANG CAN YOYO!!!, WOW Without a doubt, with Mike Naoe and his gang, if there are any fish even close to the boat they will get em on the Lures. Today we had a great day of fishing and they had to earn it for sure, but good things happen when you work hard. We are making a run down the coast tonight to try a different area tomorrow for Yellows and then roll up the line for the next day. The photos of the day are Mike Naoe and Greg Stoney with just a taste of what went on today - and of course Mike did release that Big Old Bass.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Team P.S. Hi to Mikala, Zoe and Jaimie - miss you Guys a lot and I'm getting plenty of rest. |

CHOPPY WEATHER After spending the whole trip running downhill in the lee of an Island, it was time to pay the Piper. We had a very bumpy ride coming up the line last night and all day today - it is the Eastern Pacific ocean. Anyhow, we did manage to pick up 6 Yellowfin tuna in our travels and the forecast is for it to back off soon. We would like to Thank Stanley Chin, our Chartermaster, for putting his group of Guys together, and also Brent Koshu for putting out just a wonderful Sushi spread the other day at the Island. COCO BUTTER HOT WEATHER We spent the morning in the same place we had good fishing yesterday for a couple hours and then moved over to the Big Island on the Inside, where we managed to find some of the trophy- size Yellows, an area which was also infested with Bonita. It was still a good day, and at one point we hit some 78 degree water... man was it hot. The photos of the day are Dennis and Ted with a couple shots of the better size fish we caught today. We are running up the line now and hope to pick off a few Tuna before we call it a trip.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

TODAY WE WERE BACK ON TRACK We made the decision to come into the inside Islands and fish for Yellowtail after our painfully slow day out at the Big Island, and it was the right move without a doubt. We caught the bulk of our fish today in the morning and the afternoon it was pick a scratch but when the day was done in turned out just fine. We are going to spend another day inside tomorrow before it's time to run up the line and right now we are enjoying a nice dinner in the Lee of an Island. The photos of the day are Doug Rodricks and Tim Ebner, (Brother of Capt. Tom Ebner of the Boat "Aztec").
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

NOT SUGER COATING THIS REPORT We arrived at the Big Island armed and ready around 11:00 am and we were all pumped up to say the least. We got down in the zone and right away started to see sign of fish , life, bait and scattered fish on the machines. The first spot No bites, the second we saw fish in the circle but the one thing that made us say, something's not right was poor coonditions. We spent 7 hours looking at spots with fish but the Island was just not right. We picked it up at 1800 hours and started heading East. We are going to go fish Yellowtail tomorrow and just take it frome there. Don't be alarmed..... that place will be back on the bite again, but we are going to give it a rest for a few days. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

Family Today we started out on the lower end of our range as far as fishing on the last day. We thought that by covering water not yet looked at before, our chances at a dorado kelp would be good. Today was our day at fishing and not catching as we spent a better part of the day looking for the magic kelp for no results. The picture of the day is our respected leaders David and Steven Samarin whom with the help of many makes this James Hardware Gang trip possible. After being with this group for 7 seasons, we truly feel blessed that we have become part of this great fishing family as we hope the annual tradition will continue for many years.
Thanks A Bunch, The Guys |

Good Karma Call it what you want, but it sure seems that quite often with our group representing James Hardware Gang, we have something special on our side. With recent reports of scratch fishing we went to the grounds with the hopes of catching a few tuna. The morning started off with a small flurry of biting fish, then it turned into all show and no go. We watched fish boil around for hours and found bites extremely hard to come by. After several moves we found one that wanted to bite a little bit and were able to settle in and pick away at the fish for the rest of the day. We were lucky to end up with over sixty fish for the day. The bulk majority of the fish were school-sized fish but there was enough better grade fish mixed in to keep it interesting. Today's picture is Dave Urane and his 80lb fish with the assistance of our birthday boy, Cameron Cribben.

Faith After yesterday's long ride we were all eager to spend the day wetting a line. We were lucky to be at the right place at the right time when we started catching fish at daylight right where we spent the night. The rest of the day was spent jerking and pulling on Yellows having a great time. We had the pleasure of sharing this great Yellowtail experience with one of our best regular groups that have never done this before. Quite often we are redundant with phrases we use in our reports, but we try to mix up the personal in our pictures. This evening is different as once again Jack Sussoev and son are pictured with a trophy 50lb yellowtail.
Going For Jackpot, The Guys |

Ever Changing Ocean One of our fishing options has been making the move down the beach in search of yellowtail. We have been enjoying downhill flow making good speed most of the year. Today we woke up like we were dragging buckets behind the boat and found ourselves bucking an uphill current and making poor speed. We arrived late in the day and managed to catch a taste of hopefully the good fishing we are going to enjoy tomorrow. The smiles say it all as Jack Sussoev and Randy Loscutoff pose with part of the evening's catch.

ABOVE AND BEYOND ANYONE'S EXPECTATIONS First of all I'm going to quote a something that was said by one of the best Long Range Captains of my time, Capt. Steve Loomis. "The definition of Luck is when opportunity and preparation meet", and that is exactly what happened on this trip. Mike Goldsmith and his gang were the perfect group to take on this challenge and with a lot of hard work by both the crew and the group, everything fell into place. One would have to think that this is a sign of good things to come for the early fall season we're approaching. 1st place: Mark Schneekluth 140.6lbs Yellowfin Tuna 2nd place: John Stetson 97.2 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 3rd place: Pat Noll 87.4 lbs Yellowfin Tuna

BOUND HOME!! We spent a couple of hours fishing for Yellows this morning and then bundled up the rods and put her on course for home. We had a nice little snap on all premium size Yellows - just about everybody that was trying for one, got one, and some had had enough and just watched the fun. We would like to Thank Mike Goldsmith the Chartermaster of Chasin' Tuna, and what a great trip it was!!

THE BIG FISH HAVE ARRIVED Yesterday we thought it was just luck, but today we found some of the bigger grade fish somewhere else; we have put together a very nice trip on these bigger Tuna and are thanking our lucky stars. We ended up with 22 Tuna and all but one fish was the premium grade Tuna, not to mention the Bigger Yellows we got in the morning to make it another great day of quality fishing. Today pictured are Bruce and Rick showing off some of their stuff. We are going to spend a couple of hours fishing in the morning and then call it a trip and run for home.

DAY OF THE BIG ONES I would have to say things are shaping up around here, after our good luck last trip, it seems that there is more to this place than meets the eye. We really hope that this is a sign of things to come in the near future for the the rest of our Summer trips. The photos of the day are Mark and Dwight with the Larger models caught today - everybody caught a nicer fish in today's bite. We also managed to scrape up a couple a round on premium size Yellows to compliment our Tuna fish. We have another full day here and then we'll just take it from there as far as the last day's plan.
Good Night and wish us all luck, The AA Gang |

SOME DAYS YOU GOT TO EARN IT!!! We arrived at the Big Island around lunch time and the good news is we saw sign of Tuna in short order, but of course we're Big Game Hunters now. The conditions are totally opposite of what they were a few days ago.... so what's new there. It wasn't until just about dark we got things dialed in for the day and were able to pick up a few of the nicer grade tuna before the sun went down. Mike and Pat are the stars of today shown in the photos. We hope it doesn't take until dark tomorrow to get on them again.
Good Night, The AA Gang ps. Hello Dan from Texas, sorry you didn't make it. The Gang. |

Uesugi-Kimura hits a home run The boat returned this morning with a beautiful catch of Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail - they seemed to be in the right place at the right time this trip. Thanks to all the guys that brought down all the produce - it was so fresh and enjoyed by all! A huge thanks to George and Russell for putting together this trip - it gets more special every year. Check out pics below of jackpot winners - congratulations! Also George's niece, Michelle, with her big tuna and Capt. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END We rolled up the line last night just to see if anything in the lower offshore might have changed and it did, for the worse.... we looked at a lot of water that was void of life. The photo of the day is Kevin and Allen with the best catch of our day, and we did pick up a few handfuls of the small Albaocore with Team effort. First of all we would like to say Thanks to George Uesugi and Russell Kimura for putting together this wonderful group of guys and a gal. We look forward to fishing with them all every year.

BLESSED Today we had the intention of coming out to the Big Island in hopes of picking up some bigger Tuna to settle jackpot. We arrived around 0900 in the morning and had to look around to get located but when we did it was very good fishing on 18 to 30 lbers with a few a little bigger. By mid afternoon the bite seemed to be just about done and we made a move with only a few hours of daylight left. Yesterday we had Good Luck, but today was beyond that, we had a hit with fish up to 90lbs ++ on top of our earlier catch. In a nut shell, without just going on for a few chapters here, IT WAS GOOD TUNA FISHING..... Today's photos are just some of the bigger tuna we had late in the day, WOW..
Good Night, The Gang |
|||||||||
|
GOOD LUCK It's always good to be in the right place at the right time, and that's what happened today.... the Gang enjoyed some Yanking and Cranking. We are pretty much in the market for Tuna at this point of the game and we have a couple more days to do that. The photo of the day is a shot of some of the deck fun today.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

|
GETTING OFF TO A GOOD START We made the long run down to one of our favorite Yellowtail holes and it worked out just fine. The fish we picked up were 14 to 22 lbs with a few bigger, which made the run worth it. We are going to fish all day for Yellows tomorrow and just take from there. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

LAST DAY We ran back up to finish our trip on the Offshore scene, but not to fish around any other boats. We ended up putting together a fair day of fishing on just about all species; Albacore, Yellowtail, Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna which wrapped things up on a good note. Myself and the entire Crew would like to Thank all of you for joining us again this year, and a special Thanks to Doug Hone and his gang who used to fish with Brian and me when we owned the Pacific Queen - these guys would come out from Nevada to go 1.5 day fishing with us then and now they're 5 day fishing with us on the American Angler now!

A DAY AT THE BIG ISLAND This morning we got off to a good start - the Yellows were biting right after daylight. As always, good things don't last forever - we could have enjoyed a longer bite, that's for sure, but just about all the gang got a few shots at fish. Some got a few and some got Rocked. The rest of the day was no lead pipe cinch, we tried a lot of our favorite spots for next to nothing for our efforts. We did finally land on Tuna that felt like things could have gotten going, but The Sheriff was on patrol and He was hungry for fresh Tuna. We our en route to fish our last day offshore and hopefully finish it off with a bang.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

LOCAL ZONE!!! We started up around 50 miles from home and began looking around in the dark to find some fish to shut down on, at 0515 in the am we found a dab of tuna and waited them out. At 0615 we hooked our first fish, we ended up landing some nice Yellowfin, Albacore and a couple of BFT'S for the morning in the cluster of boats. The photo of the day is Dale and Taylor with some of the Yellowfin for the morning. We are enroute for the Big Island to fish around some shallower water tomorrow... so wish us luck.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

|
VERY NICE WEATHER We fished the local area today and mixed it up with some of our old friends. We had a pretty decent day on BFTs mostly 12 to 20lb grade fish with a mix of Albacore. The photo of the day is Brent Curtis with one our Albies. We are going to fish this zone in the morning and then most likely make a run down to the Big Island.. .
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

Angler's Choice gang is home This 5 day trip docked at 7am, highlighted by another fine Yellowtail catch. The fish were beautiful out of the RSW and they were mostly a very nice grade. Thanks to Luc from Anglers Choice for the nice giveaways and for putting new sponsor Christine on board - the group enjoyed her enthusiasm. And of course, thanks to all our wonderful passengers on this 4 dayer turned to 5 days - everyone went with the flow and we appreciate it. Check out pics below of jackpot winners - congratulations. 1st place: Eric Newby 41.8 lbs Yellowtail 2nd place: Dennis Saylors 37.4 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Ernie Seko 34.4 lbs Yellowtail

EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT In a nut shell, we had a good day of Yellowtail fishing, but things are never the same from day to day. This morning we didn't land on the premium fish as the day before, but throughout the day we moved around and made things happen. We are on the Anchor enjoying a nice dinner right now and then will start running up the line and fish offshore tomorrow before it's time to bundle up the rods and call it a trip. The photo of the day is the gang with our trophies from this afternoon.
GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK, The Gang |

ANOTHER DAY IN THE LEE Today was one of those days were we saw more than we hooked. The gang had to work for every fish they caught- it didn't come easy, but when it was all said and done we landed well over 50 absolutely Premium Size Yellows. We are going to spend another day down here in the Land of Giant Yellows and run up tomorrow night. The photo of the day is Allen Paieri with one of the first fish caught this morning.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

MOSTLY TRAVELING We made the long run down to San Benitos Island to get a few hours of fishing in before the sun went down and after trying a couple of spots we finally found somewhere to keep some steady action going til the sun fell over the horizon. We ended the afternoon with 58 Yellowtail ranging 15 to 25 lbs for our efforts which made the long run worthwhile. We're going to stick around this neck of the woods for tomorrow and and then we'll just take it from there.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

Playing Through Last night we experienced a little chop for the first time this trip, but when daylight arrived the sea condition had backed off to a tolerable level. We planned on going through the area of water that we had fished on the way down and we found areas of good clean water that had potential for good things - we even had random jig strikes on small bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna and the occasional dorado. Unfortunately for us while traversing the areas where the jig stops occurred, we couldn't find any fishable kelps and in the areas that we did find kelps, they had either small fish or no fish at all. Regardless of an uneventful last day, we had a great trip and everyone on the group meshed into one fishing machine. Posing with a sample of small sashimi nuggets is Bryan Sherman, Joe Ferris and Ken Kaida.
Looking Forward To Seeing The Group Next Year, The Guys |

So Lucky We are so lucky to be a part of what this is all about. Twenty four individuals on vacation, doing something that they are passionate about while leaving lifes stresses behind. We enjoyed a flat calm night broken up by a short bait making session and woke up to another great day. We started picking good grade yellowtail on our first stop and that continued throughout the day. We never encountered the pandemonium of everybody-having-one-on type fishing but instead had a steady pick. Being that it was day two at the islands, there was a real relaxed feel on deck with a lot of people relaxing. And as is evident by today's picture, everybody is having a great time.

Mellow Every fishing group has their own personality and the group we have aboard is very mellow. We have a great mix of seasoned veterans and a couple of first timers. It was very apparent the calmness that a few individuals possessed when the fish started biting during the breakfast call - there were several individuals that didn't flinch and enjoyed their breakfast rather than rushing out on deck. We questioned some of them and their reply was that they were sure to catch a few. We wish that we could someday be as confident and cool about it. By good fortune, they ended up being right and we went on to have a successful day of fishing. After good morning action on 15-25lb fish, we went looking for premiums. We saw plenty of fish but unfortunately they would not cooperate. Luckily for us in the evening we found a batch that wanted to bite a little bit and everyone got to sample the excitement of these big fish rolling around throwing water. Lilians Collins gets the assist from our beloved "mijo" showing off one of these beautiful fish.
It's All Good The Guys |

Mix Where we get the terminology to describe the type of fish that we are catching is sometimes beyond me. We started offshore in beautiful weather, kelping and dragging jigs. We got in an area of scattered tuna sign and enjoyed a sample of "jig and a bait" style yellowfin tuna action. We captured 18 decent grade tuna fish before we dedicated the rest of the day to kelping. We never found a kelp that was loaded up, but managed to pick all day long. We ended up with a nice "mix" of yellows and dorado and everybody had a great time. Looking For Premiums Tomorrow, The Guys |

Thanks again to everyone on this charter - we look forward to seeing all the guys on this one every August! Check out pics below of jackpot winners - congratulations! Today was a success offshore. We had a nice shot at a few kelps and ended the trip with Dorado and Yellowtail. Thanks so much to Harry Yamada and Roger Kuramoto for all their work organizing this trip once again this year, we appreciate all you do to put it together! The Guys |

The good life We spent spent another day enjoying the tranquility of yellowtail fishing at the islands. After a flat calm night, we were fortunate enough to put the anchor down in the right place. We enjoyed steady fishing with two to eight fish hooked up at one time for a better part of the morning. We pulled the anchor mid morning in search of premium yellows, and once again we had the good fortune to stay busy on those for the rest of the day. A great time was had by all and we are traveling up for offshore fishing all day tomorrow. The only way to live, The Guys (spot available on the Tues, Sept 2nd five day trip....) |

|
Change of pace Today we switched gears and decided to put the anchor down and enjoy some world class yellowtail fishing. With every cast - not knowing if you were going to hook a 15lber or a 30lber. From yo yo lures to surfaces jigs, every bite was a smile. For some this was a first and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With good weather and the opportunity to catch a beautiful premium grade yellowtail, we are sticking to ours guns and giving it another day down at the island. Today's picture is our wonderful group displaying some of the premium yellows that the islands have to offer down here.
Enjoying the scenery, The Guys |

Keep Trying We decided to spend the day in blue water looking for tuna fish while taking advantage of the good weather. We started seeing signal right away with a few jigstrikes and bait fish after first light. We saw enough signal to keep us interested, but we just couldn't put it together. After we captured three handfuls of mixed yellowfin and bluefin we decided to continue our search further south. We did not know what to expect in this uncovered area and what we found was a kelpless and fishless zone. Luckily for us, our mastmen never give up and we were rewarded with twenty more yellowfin tuna right before dark. Todays picture is Gary Teraoka and Greg Young with a matching pair of nice flats.

Hi Sonia - we'll see you on the 6 day! NEVER SAY DIE! We have had a great trip on Yellows and Mahi - the only thing we were lacking were.... Tuna Fish. Nothing like waiting til the 9th inning to pull a Rabbit out of our Hat. We finally got on some Albacore and a mix of BFTS late in the day to finish off just a wonderful trip with a fabulous group of guys. The Photo of the day is some of the gang with the first 3 of 40 that we landed this afternoon. We would like to say Thanks to everyone on the boat for coming out with us and especially to Ken and Wes, our sponsors. We always have a great time with them and are looking forward to their upcoming 6 dayer.

THE WEATHER JUST DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS We spent the day traveling up the line and just for kicks stopped on a couple of Kelps to break up the ride. We did manage to scratch some nice Mahi's and a few nice Yellows, but we never found any Tuna type fish. The photo of the day is Mr. Tyler with about a 30lb Yellowtail and you can see in the photos background what a flat ocean we have right now. We will be in position in the morning up in the Albacore zone and hope it's the right day for us.
GOOD NIGHT TO ALL, The Gang |

A NICE DAY ON GOOD GRADE YELLOWS Everyday, fishing is different - even if you're at the same location, it's never constant for very long. This morning it seemed like we were off to a slow start and then all of a sudden, a spot of the Big Yellows popped up and we headed for them. The past few weeks we've seen this fish pop, just not be eager to bite, but that wasn't the case today...we picked up 35 of those Big fish right out of the gate. Througout the day we had to work for everything we caught, but we just about got our daily limits with 90% of them being the premium grade fish, WOW. The photos of the day are Jay & Leann and also Jamie with a sample of the size fish that were caught today. The weather is still flat calm and we are going to run up tonight to put ourselves in position for Albacore fishing.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

OFF TO A GOOD START Today was the first day of fishing on our trip after traveling all day yesterday and we really didn't know what was in our future for the day. We stuck it out looking offshore in uncharted areas and it worked out... I love it when that happens. The weather has laid down beautifully, giving us excellent visibility to spot kelps which produced a fair amount of Yellows, Dorado and a few Yellowfin Tuna. When it was all said and done - what a great day it was! The photos of the day are Darrel with a nice Yellow and Johnny with a quality Flathead. We are going to fish the Islands tomorrow and hope to put a catch together.

The Island fishing was great, the offshore fishing was not so great and the company was excellent. Thanks again to Brad Lemoine of Sport Chalet for all his hard work putting the group together - we appreciate you!! Check out pics below of jackpot winners - congrats. 1st place: Leland Blankenship 35.6 lbs Albacore 2nd place: Mike Caballero 34.8 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Tom Szczeblowski 34.6 lbs Yellowtail

MAN THAT WAS A LONG RUN.. We worked up from the Islands all day to finally make it up to the some of the boyz who were scratching at some Tuna Type fish. We did stop and pick up a nice piece of firewood on the way and picked a few Yellows off a kelp to break up the ride. When arriving on scene, we had a couple of hours to catch some fish in a hurry. The photo of the day is Bob, JT and his brother Nic - with the firewood We would like to say Thanks to Brad, our sponsor, and all of the Sport Chalet Gang for coming out with us again. It is always a pleasure to take these Gentlemen fishing, and we're looking forward to fishing with some of the gang on the 10 day in the fall season. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED We are running up the line right now after a fun day of Yellowtail fishing in the calm of the Island. Sometimes when you're fishing for Yellows with your Longrod - and you cast at just the right time - the results are like Michael Changs in today's photo of the day. It sounds like slow fishing on the offshore scene but so did it 5 days ago when we had great fishing, maybe tomorrow will be our day!!!.

TODAY WAS MORE LIKE IT! After a very long day of offshore fishing without producing any fish to speak of - today our timing was good. We arrived at one of our favorite fishing Islands and started to catch fish right away. When it was all said and done, we ended up with a very nice day of fishing. Most of the fish were 15 to 22 lbs and right before sundown we got on some trophies to finish up the day in a beautiful way. The photo of the day is Art and his son Mike Caballero assisted by Capt. Johnny at the gaff.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

THE OFFSHORE THING DIDN'T WORK OUT TODAY After having steady fishing just a couple of days ago, I thought it would be a No Brainer to go back down to the zone and start the trip. In the morning we didn't have a problem finding fish but getting them to bite was Impossible. After 16 hours behind the wheel with only 3 Albacore in the hatch, we had to make a move. We're enroute to the Island and rigging up our Yellowtail gear and will give that a try and let the offshore scene change for what we hope, is the better. GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

LONG DAY UNTIL THE END Nothing like making a 200 plus mile move to catch a few fish, but we got to do what we got to do! Here's a couple of photos of the gang with what action we had late in the afternoon today - we were very fortunate to catch what we did from listening to reports that were coming out over the Radio waves. It's time to call it a trip and Thank all of the Gang from the Crystal Pier group with Ring Leader, (also Waiter, Boat Scrubber, Master of Ceremonies, and Prankster to name a few other job descriptions) Jim Bostian. You can't say enough about how generous Jim is with all his beautiful raffles prizes.... not to mention the Gag gifts which definitely kept things interesting!!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, Your Crew, Sam, Ray, Taro, Cam, Jordan, Nate and Paul |

THE DAY STARTED OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT This morning was a different day - the conditions were much better and so we went with that. We took a look at a spot we hadn't visited yesterday and it paid off... we had 3 to 5 going for a few hours on 14 to 25 lb Yellows and a few of those Jumbos mixed in to keep it interesting and the gang was real happy with that. Fishing shut off for us around 11:00am - we looked around where we caught fish yesterday but no go, so it was time to hit the road Jack. We hope tomorrow we'll be able to pick up a few Tuna Type fish to finish off the trip. GOOD NIGHT AND DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CAMERA MAN? The Gang |

BACK ON TRACK Just about every day that you're out here, fishing some things at certain times just set the tone - you know if it's going to be a good day or bad day. It doesn't matter if you're fishing for Rockcod, Tuna, Albacore, Salmon or Yellows.... when fish bite at the crack of dawn, it seems like you're off to a good start. The photo of the day is our Superhero, Jim Bostian, with the first fish of the day, which is the biggest so far and without a doubt, set the tone. We had a very nice day of fishing on Good Grade Yellows today; the gang had to work for them, but it turned out to be a productive day. We are going to take another shot at our fishing hole in the morning and most likely start moving up some time after lunch to an offshore destination unknown. For the time being we are enjoying the comfort of the Lee and will be back at it in the morning.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |

Some days timing is everything We made the long run down to the Big Island to fish our first day and let the offshore scene straighten itself out. I would have to say we've had good luck in the late afternoon here, but it just wasn't one of those days. This place looked good when we pulled in, but the magic just wasn't there. We ended up with just a couple of nice Yellows and a Halibut for our efforts. The photo of the day is UNCLE Bill Kuehl with a 2 for 1 on the calicos during our hot sundown action bite. and we did release all of the Bass for Good Luck. The weather is very nice behind the Island and we are going to give it our best tomorrow.
GOOD NIGHT AND JIM IS SERVNG DINNER AGAIN!!!! The Gang |

The boat returned at 6am this morning with a great variety of fresh fish - everything from Albacore to Bluefin to Yellowtail to Dorado to Halibut hit the deck....gently.... Thanks to Al Tokunaga and Eddie Wong for putting this one together and to everyone who joined the San Fernando Japanese American Fishing Club guys. Also thanks to The Gaydoshs for supplying answers to all the fishing/boat history questions you were asked during the voyage - we were honored to have you with us. 1st place: George Iwamoto 41.4 lbs Halibut 2nd place: Dennis Ludington 39.0 lbs Albacore 3rd place: John Ito 37.8 lbs Yellowtail Honorable Mention: Dick Gaydosh 35.6 lbs Yellowtail
The boat departed with the 6th annual Crystal Pier Charter. Jim Bostian kicked it off with the traditional large platters of Sushi, coming down the dock. Stay tuned in and we'll keep you posted on their trip. American Angler |

What Happened? We started out on the tuna grounds with very high expectations. Reports from the previous day were very good with excellent sign of fish from the whole fleet. The morning started out great with several short stops lined up back to back. Right about the time we thought it was going to be easy(what were we thinking?) the fish disappeared. For someone to say that they swam away, went down or just plain evaporated is just an opinion not fact because as far as we know nobody has talked to a fish lately. The fact of the matter is that when we don't see the fish, it makes them hard to catch. We ended up scratching for our 51 albacore and 8 bluefin tuna...which was made possible by our talented fishing group. Al Tokunaga and the SFVJAFC once again put together a great group and we would like to thank him. Sorry for no daily picture as we kept waiting for the big hit. Scratch We covered alot of water today and drowned alot of feathers behind the boat. We had grease weather which made an otherwise uneventful day into a great one. We ended up with thirty or forty mixed kelp fish that came one or two at a time. We are honored to have Dick and Millie Gaydosh aboard sharing all of their great fishing adventures and knowledge. Today's picture is of Millie having a great time
On The Albacore Grounds Tomorrow!! The Guys We have 2 spots available on our 5 day trip departing Sat. July 19. |

The Show We left the offshore scene to enjoy some fishing on the beach and the 25-40lb yellowtail we found in shallow water left a definite impression in all of our minds. Fish walking up the side of the boat leaving sea lion sized swirls as they chase down a bait or the surface iron is not a scene easily forgotten. We had a great day on the big yellows and had a handful of bonus halibut. The biggest halibut of the day was caught by George Iwamoto with the assist by Taro Takeuchi.
We Enjoyed The Show!! The Guys We have 2 spots available on our 5 day trip departing Sat. July 19. The fish are biting, jump onboard and join in on the fun. |

Mixed Bag Today we took advantage of the good weather and went offshore looking for our tuna honey hole from last trip. We saw a few tuna marks in the dark but by eight in the morning we realized something was different. We ended up spending the kelping, we were able to catch every offshore species albacore, bluefin yellowfin yellowtail and Dorado in all different shapes and sizes. Lance Yamanaka lead the hit parade with his 40 pound class bluefin tuna.

Generosity This trip that we are on is very special for many reasons. First off, this trip would have never come around if it weren't for the generosity of Ken Johann. The planning that it took to organize Friends and family to join one another was overwhelming and in the end it payed big dividends as everyone had a great time enjoying the ocean and escaping the rigors of everyday life. The majority of people assembled have very little if any fishing experience but that did not seem to matter. Under the tutelage of the deck crew everyone did a great job on the rail and caught a bunch of fish. Today we enjoyed good action on albacore and bluefin tuna. Whales, porpoise, squid, and many other wonders of the ocean topped off with the fishing made this a great offshore experience.
The World Needs More Generosity!! The Guys |

Mixed Bag Today we changed locations and took advantage of some great weather conditions and ended up with a mixed bag of several different species. We caught albacore, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail. We were busy most of the day, as the slow times for tuna fishing was filled in with kelps for yellows. Our charter master Ken Johann poses with friends holding a stock-sized kelp yellow and Taro Takeuchi helps Garry Fox with an albacore that was subdued by the old standby Zuker jig.
Hoping For More, The Guys |

Sometimes Seeing Is Not Believing Last night we got to the grounds and found a deal of albacore that wanted to bite. We ended up with a couple of handfuls of fish and and a great place to start in the morning. We woke up to much nicer weather and saw sign of fish right away. The unfortunate thing is that for the majority of the fleet {there were a few exceptions} the fish did not bite like they should have. We saw plenty enough volume throughout the day, but never got one stop to react they way we would've liked. We almost ended up with two around and thankfully we will be blessed with two more days of beautiful fishing weather. We are sorry that there is no picture this evening and we'll make up for it tomorrow. Hope They Bite Better Manana, The Guys |

PICK, PICK, PICK First of all, I'd like to comment on the weather, it was aalll right. Fishing has been the same for the last few days, in that Luck has come into play and again today, that was the case more than once on the Radio waves. We ended our day with 60 Albacore, which was pretty much the average score, unless you were the token couple of boats that got a super-stop. We would like to say Thank You to all of the 4th of July Gang for coming out with us on this trip. It is just about the same group of folks every year and it was great to see everyone and we have a good time every year. The photo of the day is some of the gang strutting their stuff.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH AND HAVE A HAPPY 4TH OF JULY TOMORROW NIGHT, Your crew Sam, Brian, Taro, Jordan, Jon, Matt, Nate and Paul ETA 0600 |

RATHER BE LUCKY THAN GOOD ANY DAY OF THE WEEK It has not been easy to put a catch together out here on the banks the past few days, with the weather up and fishing scratch at best. Today was one of those days we did everything right and that doesn't mean skill, it was just Good Luck. We ended up with 64 Albacore and 1 token Bluefin tuna for our day. We would just like to say Thank You to all of the gang and especially Brad Overfield from the Imperial Palace, who puts a lot of work into organizing this trip - we look forward to fishing with you every year. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH AGAIN.

Shaker Trip Home The boat returned early this morning and unloaded absolutely gorgeous, big fat Yellowtail - many of these fish were in the 30 - 40lb league and all the jackpot fish were over 50lbs. They also had a few albacore for their efforts. A big thanks to Barry Gambarana & co. and to all our new passengers as well. And to Evan, Dayvion and Malcom, it was excellent to have the younger generation represented on board- thanks for bringing them along, Dads. Check out jackpot winners - congrats guys!! Also pictured one of Greg's sushi spreads and Kerry, the "Pig winner". Pictures and Pig, compliments of BG... 1st place: Kerry Way 53.2 lbs Yellowtail 2nd place: Jack Purtell 51.4 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Russ Suzuki 50.2 lbs Yellowtail Honorable Mention: Matt Fitch 48.4 lbs Yellowtail

BUNDLED UP AND HOMEWARD BOUND We started in Hot Albie grounds this morning, but today it wasn't so Red Hot. There is still a good spread of fish but the wind was up and for most of the day, the fish were down. We did have a couple of stops to make it worth our while, but as usual we wanted More! We would like to Thank Barry Gambarana and all of the gang for coming on the annual Shaker Tour trip, we had a lot of fun with everybody and can't wait til next year to fish with all of you again. THANK YOU SO MUCH! GOOD NIGHT AND MAY WE ALL DREAM OF BIG SCHOOLS OF ALBACORE, Your Crew, Sam, Ray, Jordan, Cameron, Jon, Nate and Greg |

TRAVEL DAY We spent most of the day traveling, but did run across a small spot of Albacore, Yellowfin and also a few Yellowtail. It was a just a little warm up for tomorrow - we hope. We are going to spend the last day of our trip up in the one day area and hope to get some more Albies for the gang. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

THE YELLOWTAIL GODS WERE LOOKING DOWN ON US TODAY First of all, let's start with the weather report... just beautiful, flat calm all day. The fishing was very steady for most of the day - we had a little slow period just after lunch, but by mid afternoon we got our game on. The photo of the day is Kurt Suzuki wiith his Giant Yellowtail weighing over 50lbs on the hand scale. We are going to start rolling up the line tonight with the news of the Albacore biting. It's going to be a bit of a run for us so we're on our way. Hope they keep hitting!

FISHING THE BEACH We are taking a break from the offshore scene and thought we would start by fishing for Yellows. Things looked a little dim when we arrived, but late in the afternoon the ocean started to wake up and we were able to put some nice fish aboard to start this trip off on the right foot. The photo of the day is Evon and Capt. Ray with the biggest saltwater fish she has ever caught - I'm sure she'll have more firsts during her trip. The weather is nice and we're going to focus on Yellows here for the next couple of days before taking a stab at offshore.

|
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE OFFSHORE SCENE Again we looked at a lot of water today to finish up our trip and the only thing we had to show for it was 1 smaller Bluefin Tuna. Things aren't all bad - there is still a wide spread of Albacore which tells me it's just a matter of time. This is a wrap and we would like to Thank all of the Gang for coming out on the Mike Farnsworth 5 day trip and of course a special Thank you to Mike for all his hard work putting his trips together. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH, The Crew - Sam, Taro, Ray, Jon, Cameron, Nate and Paul. ETA 0600 Note for tomorrows Group, Be here early we are going to try to depart by 10:00a.m. Thanks. |

BETTER DAY! It seemed the fish were in a morning biting pattern here the last couple of days and of course that changed today. It took some time and searching, but we finally landed on some fish that wanted to bite. The photo of the day is Jay Klopfenstein with Super deckhand, Cameron. We have been in travel mode most of the afternoon to fish the Offshore zone tomorrow in hopes of finding some fish that want to bite.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

AT LAST, WE STOPPED THE BOAT AND DID SOME FISHING We arrived to our destination around 0900 hours and I'd have to say we missed out on the morning bite. Fishing was very slow until around lunchtime when it seemed we started to put our day together. There is very good sign of fish at our location - I sure hope we're here when the light switch goes on. We ended the day with 48 of the Premium Grade Yellows and like I said, that didn't even dent what we saw. The photo of the day is Adrian Klopfenstein with one of her Trophies of the day.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

SOMETIMES IT HELPS TO BE ABLE TO SEE! We avoided the fog as long as we could today, but there was no way of getting out of it in the afternoon. We started outside and saw fair sign of fish in the dark but again throughout the day the fish had their noses in the Mud. We were high boat on the BFT count with 1 fish for the day and the LR fleet didn't have a whole lot more than that to show for all of our efforts. The photo of the day is a shot of what we had to deal with this afternoon... needless to say it was hard trying to spot anything. The bright side of the story is there is sign of fish - all types - in many areas and they will be on the bite soon, you can count on that. Tomorrow we are going to fish for Yellows so keep your fingers crossed for us.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

Zuker/G Loomis back The boat returned this morning with a great variety catch- Yellowtail, Bluefin, Albacore, Yellowfin and White Seabass. Thanks to all our regulars on this trip - it's really fun watching the group after another year of fishing together and hear stories of their adventure, and to the new guys that joined in the fun, thank you we appreciate your business and hope to see you back on the American Angler. And of course, it wouldn't be the trip it is without Zuke and Phil! Check out pics below of jackpot winners and John Haugland's biscuit beauty: 1st place: George Kaneko 39.8 lbs Albacore 2nd place: Mark Farris 36.8 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Matt Hall 36.4 lbs Yellowtail
The boat departed a little before noon with the annual CME4tuna 5 day trip - it was really warm today, but everyone took it in stride and found shade to cool themselves until boarding time - have a great time gang! |

A great ending! With only a half day of fishing left in the trip, conditions could not be more in our favor. Flat calm seas, no wind and a crew eager to spot breaking fish all add up to successful fishing. Today we spent the morning sliding into breaking fish that wanted to bite for us. We ended the day with 25 bluefin, 8 yellowfin and one albacore to wrap up another fun filled Zuker/G-Loomis 7 day trip. Special thanks to John Lloyd of Zuker lures for all of his great stories and sharing his fishing knowledge with everybody, and also a special thanks to Phil Oliva of G-Loomis, a class act working for a classy company. Kaneko, Takeuchi, Kiyohara, Hatada display the Japanese American fishermans favorite fish, the bluefin tuna.
Looking forward to next year's trip, The Guys (couple of spots on Wed. July 9th 5 day) |

The Amazing Ocean How many times have we gone fishing looking forward to a good day because they have been catching limits for several days? It seems like there are so many fish how can somebody possibly miss? Out on the grounds at daylight the following day there are no signs of fish and by mid morning it almost seems as if there are no fish in the entire ocean. Thus comes the old saying, "You should have been here yesterday". Quite often though as fast as the fish go away, they seem to reappear. This afternoon we ended up in a zone where three days ago it was 3 degrees cooler, off color and had no signs of life. Today the water was 65 degrees, purple, full of bait balls and had many spots of breaking fish. We had several stops after we got into the zone late that were very encouraging. In a matter of days, we went from no offshore sign to catching bluefin, yellowfin and albacore. The interesting thing about our couple of albacore stops was the size of the fish. One stop we had 5 "fatso's" that weighed 30-43lbs and another stop where they weighed 22-25lbs. We finished up the afternoon with 8 albacore, 8 bluefin and 3 yellowfin tuna. We would bet that this is just the tip of the iceburg for the upcoming offshore season. Today's picture is Steve Kneip with a beautiful bluefin tuna.

Focus on the target! After a couple of days of good yellowtail fishing, today's main focus was Premuim grade yellowtail. We started off the morning driving by the smaller grade yellows, hoping the better grade would make an afternoon push. We were very fortunate to stumble across several spots of good grade fish showing on the surface and biting fairly well. Everybody aboard got to sample the excitement that these fish create. Today's picture is the last of our father's day, father-son tribute. Proud father, Jim Hall flanked by his sons, Matt and Steve with the quality yellows.

Good Fishing We decided to make a move and try an area that hasn't been fished in several weeks. We found out pretty quick that we made the right decision. We had great fishing on mixed grade fish using your technique of choice. The fish we captured were 12-30lbs and in the middle of the yellowtail melee, we were treated to a special show as a couple of large, lit-up striped marlin made their presence known. Today's father and son team consists of father Dennis Serrato [who can choose his wardrobe more wisely] and his star pitcher son, Ryan.
Trying For Trophies, The Guys |

The Food Chain We fished on the beach for yellows today and saw incredible signs of life. We investigated multiple bird schools that started with areas of krill-like shrimp about a half an inch long. There were sardines and mackerel breaking the surface like raindrops only to be moved off the krill by spots of yellows. Quite often by the time we would get the boat stopped it would be too late and instead of the hoped-for yellowtail, there would be a hundred yard spot of giant squid on the surface. It made for an impressive show as this went on for miles. Even though we saw thousands of yellows with all the feed in the water, it was very hard to get a bite. One of our three father-son teams proudly get together and display a hard earned fish. George Courtney, Justin and Georgie are today's featured team.

Down Day There is a long list of excuses that can be made when one doesn't catch fish. Some excuses are based on some sort of scientific information that may or may not be true and some are based on wives tales. The one fact that remains true is that we didn't see any tuna fish all day long (nor did the rest of the fleet). Tomorrow we are changing scenery in hopes of making the most of our fishing adventure. Catchy Tackle trip returns The boat returned this morning with a catch of just World class Yellowtail (which had beautiful color when they came out of the hole) mixed in with a fair amount of the early season Bluefin tuna, a sampling of Albacore and not to forget our first White Seabass. The weather was one we all will remember in a good way...after last weeks trip. It was a great time with a variety of nice fish. Thanks to our wonderful gang of Guys and Gal thanks again to Catchy Tackle - Drew, John and Wayne - for the nice give aways on this trip. Check out jackpot winners below and passenger Carl Brown, who treated himself to this trip before going overseas to serve - thanks for fishing with us! And, not pictured, our regular passenger, Joe Skinner, caught the second biggest Albacore of the season (according to Bill Roecker), weighing in at 37.6lbs. 1st place: Sol Gordon 52.0 lbs Yellowtail 2nd place: Dave O'Halloran 40.2 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Paul Medina 40.2 lbs Yellowtail
The boat departed this morning with the annual Zuker/G Loomis trip. This trip has more every year return passengers than any other open trip we run - It was great to see everyone! Check back for reports. American Angler |

THAT'S ALL FOLKS We spent the last day of our trip offshore and around 8:oo in the morning fish starting showing up on top. Same old, Same old, the fish didn't want to bite and this time we can't blame it on the weather, that's for sure. We did end up with 6 BFT'S and 1 Yellowfin tuna to wrap it up. We had a very nice trip with the Catchy Tackle gang, the weather was just epic and of course all the Anglers were just great. So we would like to say Thanks to everybody that was on the trip and a special Thank You to Drew Grindley, John Grindley and Wayne Martin for sponsoring the trip - it's always a pleasure to fish with this group.

FISHING OUR PARADISE ISLAND We took a break from the offshore scene today to do something different - we basically wanted to be able to stop the boat and fish in this beautiful weather that we've been enjoying the last few days. We had a fair day on Yellows and a Sundown Calico bass bite on the light gear, which was a lot of fun. Several of today's fish were released to bite again another day. Tomorrow, we're going back offshore to finish up the trip and then head it for the barn. The photo of the day is today's fishing hole... Very nice.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

UP EARLY AND DOWN ALL DAY The caption pretty much sums up our day, which started out on a spot of fish which had a mix of Bluefin, Yellowfin and an Albacore... we thought we were on our WAY. As it turned out, it was just a short time frame when the fish were up and biting. On the bright side, we enjoyed some of the best weather of the spring season. We have a couple days left in our trip and we have had great fishing so far and we are going to keep doing what we do. The photo of the day is Joe Skinner and Capt. Jordan with a shot of the biggest Albacore of the season so far. We did end up with 16 bft's, 1 Jumbo Alby and a nice Yellowfin Tuna. That's a rap.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

WORLD CLASS YELLOWTAIL FISHING.... PERIOD. After 2 days of fishing the beach, we ended up catching an average of 10 fish per person, and most of these were giant Yellows. With the weight of these fish averaging 30lbs, you'll have to agree that is plenty for everyone, so we are going to spend the last couple of days on the offshore scene and hope the Tuna Gods are ready for us. The photo of the day is Sol Gordon with, without a doubt, the biggest Yellow of the trip, it was a stand-out fish. The weather forecast looks good, so wish us luck.

WHAT A FUN DAY We came in to fish the beach today and it took a little while to get located, but we stuck with it and did find what we were looking for. We ended the day with near daily limits of Yellows - pushing up to 40lbs and the first White Seabass of the spring season for us. The photo of the day is "DAD" Dave O'Halloran. The weather is very nice and the troops are having a good time.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

MORE SHOW THAN GO! Today we stayed very busy running from spot to spot of Bluefin Tuna but most of them weren't very eager. We did manage to catch 18 BFTS and 1 Albacore for our efforts. The photo of the day is father/son team, John and Drew Grindley with a sample of what we picked up today. We are enroute to an Island spot and then we'll just take it from there. Despite our score today, there is very good sign around and the conditions look very good for our upcoming trips and the summer. We are going to give the offshore scene a rest and take a look at it again later.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang |

THE WIND FINALLY BACKED OFF, BUT IT TOOK ALL DAY TO FIND EM Some days you just drive right to the fish and other days it might take a while, like it did today. We made the long run down and found warm water and some of those small Albacore but no BFT'S. After many hours of searching we did find the zone, right before dark. It seems we got in here a little on the late side, so we are going to be here all day tomorrow and see what happens. The photo of the day is Alex Tomkinsons with one of the two BFT'S we landed.
GOOD NIGHT AND WISH US LUCK, The AA Gang |

Sport Chalet 8 Day returns The boat returned this morning early from the first 8 day trip of the season. Despite the tough weather, everyone had limits of Yellowtail, 20 Bluefin, 7 Albacore and a Yellowfin. The Yellowtail were beautiful and they were cookie cutters from 34 - 36 pounds, in fact three in a row weighed in at perfect 34.6lbers... Thanks to Brad of Sport Chalet for sponsoring the trip and thanks to all of our wonderful passengers - we appreciate you! Check out jackpot winners below and then a few trip pictures:
1st place: Dennis Saylors 37.6 lbs Yellowtail 2nd place: John D'Ornellas 37.0 lbs Yellowtail 3rd place: Dan Spiegel 36.6 lbs Bluefin Tuna
The boat departed @ 11:30am with the Catchy Tackle Gang. It was great to see everyone and meet the new guys. The boat checked in this evening and it sounds like everyone has plenty of yellowtail and they fininshed the day with some nice freezer fishing. Spoke to Capt Sam tonight and he said they finally hit the jackpot today. Excellent fishing on beautiful grade and quality yellowtail all morning long. And this afternoon, under the command of Capt. Ray Lopez, they had two nice stops - good going, Ray. They are still waiting for the wind to back off, and hoping the weatherman is wrong so they can venture out. We'll have pictures at the end of the trip, as we are still waiting for parts to fix our fish report modem. American Angler |

The boat called in to let us know that they are still hunkered down at an island, catching a few nice quality Yellowtail. Sounds like they have to spend one more day before they can move on when the weather becomes nicer and that of course where they are now, in the lee of the island, it's beautiful. American Angler |

Bluefin and Albacore The boat checked in this evening and although they had choppy weather, they caught 20 Bluefin Tuna, average size 25 - 35lbs (hot stick of the day on BFTs was Dan Spiegel), 7 small Albacore and one nice Yellowfin Tuna. They are headed to dirt for tomorrow's fishing - tune in tomorrow night. American Angler |

The American Angler returned early this morning from their last May 1.5 day trip, which was a success. They spent the morning putting together a nice rock fish catch and then continued with 12 Yellowtail and a fun Bonito bite. Sounded like everyone had a great time, despite the lumpy ocean...thanks to all and hope to see you fishing on the American Angler again soon! Check out pic below of our very own Pt Loma Sportfishing Tackle specialist,A.D., with some Ling things. American Angler The boat departed today at 10:30am for the very first 8 day of the season. It was so great to see all of our regular passengers and a few new - check back for their progress.

Talked to the boat tonight and sounds like they had a successful 3 day trip - and will be back at the dock @ 7:30am tomorrow morning. Thanks to all our regulars on this annual Memorial 3 day trip and thank you to our new passengers - 3 of whom have traveled all the way from Iceland! The guys returned from this day and a half trip at 6am, which opted to fish the local Coronado Islands for Yellowtail. They enjoyed a full day of standing at the rail, soaking up the rays and having the opportunity to catch a decent grade Yellowtail. There was good sign of fish around the Island and as far as catching went... they got some, lost some and saw a bunch. Thanks to Russell for coordinating the Porterville gang! Check out pic below of Russell with our newest crewmember, Jon and Randy with Cameron, our other new crewmember - and both of them are already making us proud. Our next trip is the 3 day Memorial Day Trip which departs on Friday - check back then. American Angler After the 3 day, we have one more day and a half trip which departs Memorial Day Monday afternoon - there is still availability - call the office.

The boat returned this morning, with nothing to report but a tough day offshore and departed again this evening .... check back tomorrow night. American Angler |

The offshore scene was very slow on the American Angler today - they gave it a 110% from sunup to sundown, with no luck. Sounds like there will be a different plan for tomorrow night's trip... Our ETA is 6am. American Angler |

GOOD TIMES The Curtis Rosenthal trip returned this morning with rockfish and a couple of yellowtail and it sounds like they enjoyed their time on deck yesterday. A huge thanks to the following generous people: Bob Hoose with Berkeley and Ron Marin Kawaja with Pelagic for their donations to the raffle. Also thanks to Mike Naoe for his donations and the jackpot rod, a 970 calstar won by John Calder. Our friend Matt Salas also brought a trophy and we always truly appreciate his jigs. Thanks everyone, the people were stoked! And of course, don't forget our chartermaster, Mr.Bob Hara, who has been working for many months to make this happen. Our jackpot winners this trip were Greg Stoney, Gregg Dahl and Ken Caughlin for their Yellowtail and Lingcod. Congrats guys - check out Stoney's new trophy

AN ENDING TO ANOTHER PART OF OUR SEASON...BOAT MAINTENANCE Well we are ready for our annual topside Coast Guard Inspection next week, which means the Mighty AA is all put back together and looking good!!!! As far as the tasks accomplished during boatwork; the upper deck got a complete make-over which includes the top of the Pilot house, where we added a few more tubes to store all of the Boats Loaner tackle, Kite rods, big gear and of course, The Long Rods. Also there were a lot of upgrades done on the boat which most likely nobody will see,(like every year) down in the Engine room. We went through the whole fuel system on our main engines fuel pumps, injectors, raw water pumps, raw water cooling, system and the normal TLC we do evey year. Your AA Crew On Deck..... Ray and Taro will be onboard along with a few new faces joining the team - Jordan, Cameron and Jon, who have been down working on the boat the last couple of months. This is going to be your 2008 A team. In the Galley is our team Paul, Greg and of course Nate making those awesome salads and bread which we all love. And up in the Bridge we have those same old guys steerin the boat and working the Sonar, Sam and Brian. May 14th will be our first trip, organized by Bob Hara - a day and a half trip - and we are really excited to the get this show on the road!! Looking at the water conditions the last few months since we've been home, it reminds me of back when Brian and I owned and operated the Pacific Queen. We are looking at a cooler water year which indicates a Boomer of a Albacore year - hope I'm right. Our season is starting off with some day and a half trips into the end of May, rolling into a 3 day Memorial day and then a couple of 8 day trips, a 7 day and then Summer will be here. We have a few spots on some of these trips and I know everybody's gear is in order - so now's the time to throw your rods in the back of the Truck and come fishing. We're looking forward to fishing with all of you this season!! The American Angler family Check back - we're going to post a few pictures of the boat. |

That's a wrap The boat returned a day early from just an awesome trip with numerous fish well over the 100lb mark and a very nice catch of Wahoo to go with it. Thanks again to Ken Corwin of Ken's Custom Reels - you rock - it was a fantastic 2 weeks with you and your gang. This is the end of our 2007 - 2008 fishing season and what a great year it has been. Now it's time to tie the boat up dockside and start giving it some of that Tender Loving Care that is normal protocol every year. Looking forward to seeing everybody up at the Fred Hall Long Beach Sportshow in March (5th - 9th). And on a final note, thank you for fishing with us on the American Angler - you all mean so very very much to us. Check out jackpot winners below and a pic of the whole gang.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED After a 670 miles move and for the most part a beautiful ride most of the way it took all day but we got the job done. We fished the coast today in hopes of finishing up with some Yellows but the first spot gave a little surprise with just Dandy size Seabass 3 fish total. The photo of the day shows off the first two we caught in the first twenty minutes and Dale picked up the last one about a hour into it. Then it was time go look for Yellows, we tried various spots with no luck until the end and then Bingo we finally got on some Yelllows that wanted to bite. Everybody got to tag one or two fish and that was all it took to finish up this trip. We are going to be getting in a day early on Sunday morning our ETA should be around 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning, check our website tomorrow night to confirm the time for sure.
GOOD NIGHT AND WHAT A TRIP!!! The Gang |

TIME TO HEAD UP THE LINE We have been very lucky the last few days with good weather and good fishing - this morning we only had room for just a few more of these nice grade tuna and by lunchtime we had what we needed. The photo of the day is Bill Salyer and Bill Miller with the last two fish of the day; these were just the average size of most of our catch. Bill Miller caught the first fish over 200 lbs and caught the last fish. The plan is to run up the line for a couple of days, play around up by Cedros and then we'll just take it from there.
GOOD NIGHT, The Gang |
|||||||||
|
BLESSED WITH GOOD LUCK We had a big day on nice grade Tuna and that pretty much sums it up. We only have room in the fish holes for a handful of fish and that's going to be it and then it will be time to start heading up the line. The photos of the day are Allen and Dale with a sample of today's fishing. Tomorrow we are going to do the family thing and let the guys that need to do some catching up just go for it before it's all done. Not sure what we are going to do on the ride up.... but I'm sure it will be just what the doctor ordered.
GOOD NIGHT AND WHAT A TRIP, The Gang |

WE'RE STILL IN THE GAME Today was a different day - it wasn't til late in the afternoon when we finally got the bigger fish to bite for us. The last couple of days we have been getting a shot in the morning and then late in the day, but hey no matter when, we'll take em. The Wahoo fishing was slow we only picked up a couple but did end the day with 25 Tuna, 13 of which were over 100 lbs up to 191, and the gang was very happy with that. The photo of the day is Bill Randall with his big Tuna for today - one of the fish caught early in the day. The weather is still nice and we are all liking that.
GOOD NIGHT, The AA Gang P.S. To Twikle, Bill says he loves you |

ANOTHER DAY OF GOOD SCRATCH FISHING Today we woke up with nice weather and again it took a little time for the fish to wake up as well. Throughout the day there was always something going on down on deck - it may have been YFT small or larger, a bite on a Wahoo and every once in a while the bigger Tuna would swim by and we would hook one here and again. The afternoon was slow and we had just about given up all hope when right at sundown we hooked some bigger units... what a way to finish the day. The photos of the day are Zeke and Galen with the two cows for the day. The story with our buddy Zeke is yesterday he didn't even wet a line because of an old football injury but today he was back at it and the last fish to come over the rail was the fish of a lifetime for him. Hats off to Zeke for sticking it out. We are going to hang out for another day and are hoping for more of the same.
GOOD NIGHT FROM THE OCEANSIDE BOYZ, The AA Gang |

OFF TO A GOOD START We arrived at our destination in the wee hours of the morning. Looking at the current conditions it looked like the right place to be anchored up, we waited a couple hours after daylight and it was obvious we were not it the right place so it was time to do some of the Skipper stuff and get these folks situated. After looking around we picked out a spot and things started to happen - there was sign of better fish and a few Wahoo. We had a shot in the midmorning and midday was our slow period. By the afternoon things started to get with the program. We ended the day with 31 Yellowfintuna 50 to 232 lbs with a mix 17 Wahoo to go with the catch. The photos of the day are Ken Corwin with his 195 lb Tuna (he also caught one 202lb later) and Mark Rubins (Rubes) with his 150 plus Tuna which the first of the bigger fish for the day. The weather is very nice and we're going to give it another day then take it from there.
Good Night, The AA Team |

Bob's Sporting Goods/Sport Chalet trip finally made it uphill and home The guys were happy to be home this morning, after a choppy ride home. We want to thank Liwei Liao for being such a great onboard sponsor - and for the nice giveaways. Also thanks to Brad from Sport Chalet, who was not able to come along, but sent down his donations - thank you. A note about Bob's Sporting Goods - they have started an online tackle shop to make your life easier; just go to www.bsgtackle.com and start clicking! Thanks to all our wonderful passengers on this trip. They started with Wahoo, had a few days of big tuna hunting and finished the trip with a couple of great days with steady tuna fishing on 40 - 130lbers. We'll see everyone next time. Check out jackpot winners below.
1st place: Ben Frazier 231 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 2nd place: Ray Salvador 191 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 3rd place: Bill Randall 180 lbs Yellowfin Tuna The boat departs Sunday with the last trip of the season - a 14.5 day trip with onboard sponsor, our friend Ken Corwin, owner of Ken's Custom Reels. Check back in a few days for first report of the trip. Expecting a wet sign in guys - American Angler |

The End We woke up to windy, choppy weather with hopes of catching a few more fish before going home. It took a few different moves before we found ourselves a steady little pick on 30-80lb fish. We used the rest of our bait and caught some fish which concluded our fishing trip. Today's picture is two crews of guys that we have aboard. Tony Duprey,Monteil Tremaine, Rocky Opliger and Bob Will represent our Federal Firefighters and of course our guys. The fifty Pound tuna that they are posing with was caught by Tony and was the last fish of the trip. We had great wahoo fishing,a shot at cows and great tuna fishing on mid-grade fish. The guys aboard clicked and worked like a well-oiled machine. We would like to thank our sponsors Sport Chalet and Bob's Sporting Goods for all the great prizes and giveaways.

Fun After doing a lot of driving around this trip, today was the first day we got to sit on the anchor and catch fish. We had good scratch fishing on 70-130lb fish, keeping one to four going all morning. When it slowed down we found a deal of 30-80lb fish that really wanted to bite. We had wide open fishing for at least twenty minutes with the majority of people having fish on. We ended up with a Conservative count of at least 20 fish over a hundred to go along with the rest of today's catch. Today's picture is Charlie Iwashita and a tuna he caught on our favorite surface iron, the Salas 7x. One other interesting note is how wahoo fishing has stayed consistent at the "Bank", even though there has always been someone there. Our next trip is going to be one of the rare modern day chances available to long range fishing. Weather permitting our boat will be there after almost a week's rest which barring some inexplicable fishing phenomenon has a chance to result in great wahoo fishing. As chances would have it there is one spot available... so call Lori.
We Hope For More Of The Same Tomorrow, The Guys |

|
Tough We saw fish from first thing in the morning till about 4 in the afternoon and it was very hard to get a bite. For whatever reason you come up with - the plain and simple truth was they just weren't biting. We stopped 15 or 20 times for about 20 bites total. On a positive note, they were a very nice grade of fish from 100-185lbs. Today's picture is Terry Curley and Charlie Iwashita having a good time with the guys. We are traveling up to finish off on the beach.
Enjoying The Ride, The Guys |
|||||||||
|
Borderline We saw just enough fish throughout the day today to make the decision of whether or not to stay at our present location. We were very close to leaving when we saw a little sign of tuna in the afternoon that bit a little. We ended up the day with 10 fish from 105 lbs-231 lbs. The beautiful grade of fish and the high hopes for tomorrow are making us stay for one more evening. Ben Frazier, who is an Avet reel representative, put it to the test today and proved that the T-Rex 50 is all that it is made to be. The picture is Ben's 231 lb tuna - one of two that he put aboard today.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow, The Guys |
|||||||||
|
Potential Where we spent the day, we saw decent sign of good fish. Throughout the day we saw several small dabs, but we just couldn't get one to stick. We ended up the day with nine fish that weighed 105-168lbs. Today's photo is Monteil Tremaine demonstrating the proper way to put the hurt on big tuna. Also today's photo displays the generosity of our great sponsors. Monteil won a custom fishing rod from Bob's sporting goods on the ride down (it's the perfect tuna stick) and his top shot was donated by Brad Lemoine from Sport Chalet (who couldn't make it).
We All Hope For A Big Day, The Guys |

|
Change Of Address We woke up with high expectations looking forward to sitting on the anchor scratching away at tuna fish. Our attitude changed after daylight when we found ourselves with slack conditions as the current never developed. As expected, the wahoo fishing was less than phenomenal as the population got wise to the marauders being trolled and the jigs that were wound in front of their face. We left early enough in the morning to get a full day's fishing in our next area. We're Looking, The Guys |
|||||||||
|
Good Timing We were very fortunate to be in a position to fish a place that has a few wahoo moving in with two days rest. We saw some sign of tuna but it did not cooperate at all. We caught a few 30-50lb tuna first thing in the morning but after that we only watched. The wahoo on the other hand cooperated with some decent action. Rocky Opliger and Tony displays one of the 69 wahoo that were put aboard today.
Hoping The Tuna Cooperate!! The Guys |

Accurate Trip Home The American Angler arrived this morning with a nice catch of tuna. We want to thank Accurate onboard sponsor Gary Teraoka for all his effort preparing for this trip - loaner gear provided and all the reels given away and also thank you to Jack Nilsen for great dock support/service - before and after the trip. We appreciate all our customers that joined this trip - we look forward to our next fishing trip together! Check out jackpot winners below and a pic of the whole gang (or most of them anyway).
1st place: Joe Gigliotti 268 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 2nd place: Doug Rodricks 234 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 3rd place: Jackie Larkin 222.5lbs Yellowfin Tuna The boat departs tomorrow with the first of two 14.5 day trips with onboard sponsor Liwei from Bob's Sporting Goods. Worked Out We planned this 10.5 day trip around fishing the Lower Banks and it worked out pretty well - especially our bonus first day, which provided us with our best catch of the trip, quality-wise. Our guys came prepared with the right equipment, but more importantly the right attitude which made this trip a success. We ended up with 9 cows and several fish weighing in over 100lbs, and saw a group of people from different places and occupations mesh into one solid group of fishing companions. Our trip was sponsored by Accurate reels and was headed by Gary Teraoka who is truly an expert on both the reels and rigging. Gary stands out amongst the best with his enthusiastic helpfulness. The daily prizes were above and beyond, as there were many Accurate reels passed out. There was also the added bonus of over 40 Accurate fishing rods and reels available for anyone to try out. More thanks go out to Izorline, Swifty, Yo's Tackle, WFO and Bill Roeker for helping with the daily prizes and giveaways.

How bout those San Diego Chargers
The more experience that we get on the fishing grounds the more we figure out how much we don't know. Looking up and down in all the usual haunts with the assistance of beautiful weather it almost seems like a guarantee. Today wasn't so as we searched all day for very little sign. We ended up with a handful of 100lbers and a few smaller ones. Todays picture is of the father and son team of George and Chris Firlit from Des Plaines,Illinois with dad's 100lber. We'll talk more about the trip tomorrow as we are signing off. PS Joe Says Happy Birthday to Nicole and Alex
We're headed up the line The Guys |

No Excuse Today was by far and away the best looking conditions that we have had so far this trip. We saw decent sign of fish throughout the day we just couldn't get one to bite very good. We managed one cow finessed up by Jeff Bott which weighed 212lbs and a few other mixed grade fish. Tomorrow is our last fishing day and we hope to end it with a bang.
Trying Our Best! The Guys |

A Near Miss We had beautiful weather to work with today so once again the guys were busy putting us on fish. However, unlike yesterday when we had some stops where they wanted to bite today we struggled. We just couldn't get them to go for us as we just picked a few when we stopped. We still caught some nice fish today as Ted Windham and Jackie Larkin (thanks to Monte at M-M tackle for setting him up) caught twin 225lbers out of the same stop.
We Have High Hopes for Tomorrow! The Guys |

GOOD FISHING Today the wind backed off and our guys in the mast really took advantage. They got us in fishy zones all morning as we enjoyed great fishing on 40-80lb fish. After a morning of jerking and puling we asked the guys to put us on some trophy sized fish and once again they came through. They got us in a birded up zone where we saw the unmistakable meter marks of big fish. We were lucky enough to hook four fish and land them all with 75% of those weighing over two hundred pounds. Starting off the big fish bite was nice 218lber. Showing everyone just what a fine precision fish killing machine the two-speed Accurate 50 is, was Accurate Rep Gary Teraoka landing a 211lber. And finally Doug Rodricks from Sierra Drifters Guide Service in Bishop, CA landed a 225lber to go along with his 234 he got two days ago (we miss you Natalie) to round off this afternoons fishing. Hoping For More Good Weather The Guys |

Master Of The Obvious We started out this morning in the same general area where we finished up last night. Right out of the gate we saw fair sign of smaller fish. We caught a few of those for a morning warm up before we went trophy hunting. We drove around for several hours before getting on a meter mark of big fish. We sat and drifted with them for a couple of hours but could never fool one of them into biting. Needless to say things were a little different today as we all know things change. High Hopes For Tomorrow!! The Guys |
|||||||||
|
It's A Start We arrived in the zone at 11 in the morning. We stopped on a single fish meter mark and after 15 minutes we finally hooked one. Wes Cogan started out the trip right by hooking and landing the first fish of the trip, which weighed 203lbs - caught on an Accurate reel (this trip's sponsor). We then drove around for several hours until we finally found an area of our liking. Our next stop we went 5 for eight on 130-150lb fish. Now fighting the setting sun, we were lucky enough to find another stop where we hooked a couple of handfuls of fish. This time the fish had the winning percentage as we landed four of those... a 265,235,196,and a 175. Bob McKittrick won today's daily prize by landing the big fish of the day.
Hoping For More, The Guys P.S.'s Ken the knot held Bessie, thanks for the new fishing rod. I broke it in with the 196. Jud, cross the 100lber off the list. Also if you live in the Bay Area - we'll be at the San Mateo Boat Show this week (our booth is near the show entrance) at the San Mateo County Event Center from Thurs 1/10 to Sun, 1/13. Come by and say hi! |

Calstar sponsored trip is home with big fish The American Angler returned this morning with 2 fish over 300lbs - 305 & 314, five fish over 200lbs, several fish over 100 to the high 100's and a very nice catch of mixed grade tuna from 18 to 90lbs. Upon arrival, after having a beautiful ride home, the guys came back to sunny southern California only to be welcomed by a windy, wet, blustery morning and all seemed to handle it very well. Thanks to John Cameron of Calstar for all the nice fishing rods given away and all the Calstars loaned out during the trip. We are looking forward to the next Calstar trip next December! Pictured below are the jackpot winners along with honorable mention 300lber fishermen (the 314lb tuna on the left was hooked by Ray and brought in by Brian. The other 300lber on the other end was a kite fish caught by John). Second picture is father/son team Gary and Cody Sos with their pair of 200lbers!
1st place: Gary Sos 240 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 2nd place: Don Kay 226 lbs Yellowfin Tuna 3rd place: Rob Sanders 207 lbs Yellowfin Tuna Honorable mention: Ray Sandoval/Brian Lescar 314 lbs Yellowfin Tuna Honorable mention: John Haskin 305 lbs Yellowfin Tuna The boat turned around this afternoon for the first 10.5 day Accurate trip with onboard sponsor, Gary Teraoke. THE DAY OF THE GIANTS Well today was an odd day, when we woke up we had a couple of Bigger boils soon after daylight. We were very patient, hung tuff and didn't move and it took a while, but finally the first of 9 fish was hooked for the day. The highlight without a doubt were the two fish over the 300lb mark, The first one landed by John Haskin, 305, on the kite and the second fish, 314lbs, was landed by Brian Lescar and hooked by Ray Sandoval (who was fortunate to catch a fish over 200lbs in yesterday's bite, and so to spread the love, gave someone else the opportunity to catch a big one. The fish Gods will look over him forever with good karma, for passing off a fish over 300 lbs....) The weather is still flat calm, we are on our way home and oh what a nice ride it is.
GOOD NIGHT AND SMOOTH SAILING, The AA Gang |

|
THE BIG FISH SHOWED UP I'll be honest - things looked a little bleak this morning. We didn't catch our first fish till around 9:00 AM and it was an 8 pounder. Then we went back on the hunt and a few hours later we found what we came for,... a drift that took us into darkness catching the Big Boys. We managed to land 10 Tuna all over 100 lb and 5 that were over 200 lbs. The photo of the day is just a sample of today's action, So in a nutshell they're still here boys. We are going to spend our last day of fishing down here on the grounds and then run straight home tomorrow night .
WHAT A WAY TO START THE YEAR, GOOD NIGHT The AA Gang |
|||||||||
|
TOMORROW IS A NEW YEAR Today was a very good day of fishing on 20 - 75 lb fish and everything in between and the weather is flat calm which made things even that much more fun. The last fish of the day was landed by Freddie Hatashita with new crewman Cameron, with the last fish caught this year on the American Angler. We are going to spend at least one more day down here for sure and just take it from there. We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and to catch lots of fish in the 2008 season.
GOOD NIGHT, From all of us on the American Angler |
|||||||||
|
BETTER WEATHER, BETTER FISHING We had good action on 20 to 91lb fish today. Weather-wise, yesterday and last night was not a whole lot of fun, but throughout the morning the wind backed off and the Sun was shining and the fish bit better. We ended up with 65 tuna, the biggest one caught by Jim Travers in today's photo. There is no doubt that this party is long from being over as we have a few more days down here in the zone and we're not done yet.
GOOD NIGHT, The Guys |

|
THEY'RE HERE, BUT NOT HITTING This morning started out very promising - things were going according to plan and we had a stop on 50 to 80 lb fish to warmed up on. After we landed 11 of those fish. they stopped biting? We moved on and found another spot and they didn't want it and this went on throughout the day... it's frustrating, but that's the way it goes sometimes. We have plenty of time to make up for today, so we are going to hang tuff and try again tomorrow. GOOD NIGHT, The AA Team |
